Here's another one from Florence. I wanted to experiment with unfinished edges, and decided this was the perfect scene for it. It was a challenge though because I use a grid when I'm painting people so I can get all my people parts in the right places. : ) I didn't want to leave grid lines behind so I only used them in the upper right quadrant (where the people are). I also changed a few things - there was a big trashcan, left, front, and I took that out; the backpack in front was an odd color that demanded a lot of attention, so I changed that; and a few other little things. It was tough to decide what edges to "lose," and how to do it, but I'm really happy with how it turned out.

Ok, this is it - the very last painting left in my studio (that isn't either packed or sold). I had it listed for a fixed price, but I'm now pricing it to move! Starting at $1.

We have made so much progress on the house, getting it ready to sell. When we moved in 8 years ago it was a total fixer upper. We did a lot of work in the beginning, stuff that had to be done or else. And then we ran out of steam. So for the past few months we've been finishing up projects, some small and some really huge (like a new kitchen!), doing most of the work ourselves. AND packing. AND trying to live in a house that is constantly being shuffled around to make room for new projects. At this point we have 6 weeks left, so it's crunch time. You may not hear from me again until we are settled in Missoula. Wish us luck! : )

Well, since the one dollar auctions worked so well, I've decided to re-list at least some of the fixed price paintings I have over again, in auction. And who knows, I may do it this way always, going forward. It's been an interesting experiment.

Alley Market

I'm pretty sure this is the last unposted painting to be found in my studio. It's a scene from France from I think possibly the cutest market in the world. This little alley especially caught my attention. I took pictures from all angles, with all manner of people strolling through, and may well paint it again in the future. I just couldn't get over this little spot with all these tall, colorful buildings coming together. And the light! That tiny shaft coming down on the wares. Oh, it was so fun to paint!

I haven't been painting at all lately because of all the work on the house (my neck is feeling better!!), but I think it's ok. After this enforced break of getting the house ready to sell and moving to Montana, I will be fresh as a daisy in the painting department, and full of vim and vigor. I already have tons of ideas bubbling up naturally while I'm doing and thinking of other things (which is my favorite way to get ideas), and I'm writing them all down so I have them ready to go later. I didn't think I particularly needed a break, but I'm appreciating it.

Back when I was first starting to experiment with the palette knife, I painted (with a combination of brush and knife) a series of roses on 10x10in. panels. I did 4 of them, learning a TON in the process, but only this one "worked out." I guess I put it away with all the others, because I just unearthed it today.

Here's another larger painting. Larger than my usual 6x6 anyway. It's from a town in France that I've painted before that I always forget the name of. But I guess it's not so important, other than it is a particularly colorful town. My favorite part is the colors infiltrating the shadow the people are walking through.

So, big news - we're moving! The short version is - we went camping in Montana this summer, and ended up deciding to move there. To Missoula, specifically. The plan is to go in the spring, and we have lots of do before then (understatement). In the meantime, not only am I listing some of my larger paintings (with hopes not to have to move them), I'm putting all my remaining books on sale (for the same reason). My plan is to clear them all out, and then start making new books later - maybe collections of particular subjects?

I am just about finished with the window project in my studio. Soon I will have my full studio back and be painting regularly again. This is one I snuck in yesterday, a sparkly scene from Germany. I can't wait to go back (there and to France) and take more pictures!

Here's a scene from a French market. Have I said before that it takes forever to paint anything with people in it? If I were a smart business person I would give them up. But then I believe that as an artist I have to paint what I'm excited about or else I will wither and die.

This one's a little bigger than usual, but I thought the scene deserved it. You might recognize the lady up the street a little ways from a different painting. I think it's kind of funny when that happens.

I've been rearranging my studio lately, and am extra motivated to move some old work that's been sitting around. This is one of two I have left from my show last year. The scene is from Times Square in New York City.

This is a scene from Seattle that I've been wanting to paint for a while. These two guys were just perfect - perfect poses, light, background, etc. I had to make only very minor adjustments. It's been especially nice to paint sunny scenes when the snow is falling here. It's been quite cozy in my studio.

While I was in Colorado, my friend and I did a lot of driving around looking for the perfect spot. After about three days we realized - there wasn't one! So we just started painting, not wherever, but in what I would consider semi-perfect spots. What I got out of it, mostly, were notes. Notes on color and value. I also took a lot of photos. And between my notes and the photos, I will be able to do some finished pieces. Like this one, which I am quite proud of.

This is another scene from NYC. There is a cool thing there that used to be an elevated train, but is now a public walkway up on the tracks. It's called the High Line. I was up there, walking along, when I took the photo for this one. I've wanted to paint it for a long time.

Here's a slightly bigger painting of small oranges invading the dishware. I always said those oranges were sneaky.
