Here's one from Colorado, somewhere in the Rockies. The sun was shining strongly in the distance, but everything else was in shadow. I find this very difficult to paint, and even more difficult to photograph with any accuracy. I promise the painting is better than the photo.

I'm feeling especially glad that I've taken so many landscape photos! I didn't ever know what I was going to do with them, but I took pictures of whatever I liked. I will continue to do so. This is a scene from Colorado ... somewhere near Vail.

Rocks in the River

While I was in Colorado, my friend and I did a lot of driving around looking for the perfect spot. After about three days we realized - there wasn't one! So we just started painting, not wherever, but in what I would consider semi-perfect spots. What I got out of it, mostly, were notes. Notes on color and value. I also took a lot of photos. And between my notes and the photos, I will be able to do some finished pieces. Like this one, which I am quite proud of.

This is another one from Colorado. It was right at the beginning of fall, when tree colors were just starting to change, but the grass was already golden.

Across the Pond

I painted this on a recent trip to Colorado.  My friend Penny and I had driven out to her friend's farm, and found this lovely pond at the back of the property. I had just learned about galkyd, and so experimented with this painting. I love galkyd! I actually painted the house and yellow bushes first, just to make sure I got those in before the light changed, but then I painted in the trees. And then all the pond stuff. So by the time I put in the distant mountains and sky, the paint on the trees was tacky enough not to make mud where they touched. This is a solution to a problem I've had forever with landscape painting!!

Also, here are all my kids (and me, and 2 of our illustrious hosts) from my San Antonio, Texas workshop last week. You guys were awesome!!

I painted this same scene, years ago, in Colorado, from life, here. I guess I took a photo, because I found it yesterday and decided to give it another go. I didn't look at the old painting until I finished. What's amazing are the similarities!

As for the painting above, I took the photo for it on a hike around Mesa Verde National Park a few years ago. The gal is my stepdaughter, Sophie, who I've been thinking about a lot lately. She is the brand new mother of Nina, my new granddaughter. We are off to see them tomorrow, in Texas, for a week. I am a tiny bit ahead with my paintings, so I'll post those as time allows.

Another painting I did in Germany - from a painting I took in Silverton, CO. Also, I posted recently about the lights I use for still lifes, and got lots of questions. So today I took photos of the two main lights I use (to light my setup, not my painting), including one closeup to show the pertinant info: (on the left, a GE Halogen 25W, on the right Ecosmart 5000K 27W)

"Rear Ends" - SOLD

This is another one I didn't have time to paint on location (backstreet in Rico, CO), so I snapped a photo. I was really taken by the succession of cars, from behind.

Yesterday's car turns out to be, well, probably an old Volvo. Possibly a Studebaker? Thank you to those who wrote!! "Red Zinger" - SOLD

I got a picture of this cool red car in Telluride. It was at the end of a long day so I didn't have time to stop and paint it, but I loved the way it was partly in the shadow. I don't know what kind of car it is ... anyone got an idea?
