Every year, for the past 5 years, at about this time, I announce a new book/collection of 100 small paintings from that year. But this time I'll be a little late. And it's not for lack of trying! For the last 3 years I've been using a company called Magcloud to print my books, but recently they were bought by Blurb, which is the company I switched FROM in the first place, because I became unhappy with them. I decided to give Magcloud the benefit of the doubt but unfortunately the new book was not up to par! So I pulled all the rest of my books from their site, and am exploring other options. It's not final yet, but I am working with a local company that assures me they can do what I want. So, with any luck, I'll be announcing the next book (#6!) sometime in January. AND, I plan to list it and all my other books/collections on Amazon. I'll let you know when it happens.

Starting tomorrow, June 14th, Daily Paintworks will be open for general membership! That means, if you are an artist and you've been looking for an online gallery to be a part of, this is it! The cost is $9.95/mo. All members can list their paintings for sale with DPW Auctions, and anyone can bid on them.

I just have to say here that I have been quite jealous of this website for the past 8 months. Sometimes it seems my husband is married to it instead of me. He certainly has been paying it more attention. In fact from the moment he wakes up in the morning, to the wee hours at night, he is on his computer making this site perfect. It's all he ever talks about. And if it wasn't such a kick-a** site, I would have kicked him out long ago. Ok, not really. He's way too cute for that. But seriously, what a fantastic husband I have!

We Saw the Light - SOLD

You're So Transparent - SOLD

The whole title for this painting is: "'You're So Transparent,' Said the Apple". My husband really came through for me tonight. I knew there was something obvious to name it, but the naming center in my brain is currently overloaded and malfunctioning.

Tomorrow my fam is flying to Sedona for 3 days of r&r before my workshop starts on Monday. As usual I painted ahead so will post whenever there's time and internet.

What's the Secret? - SOLD

Sometimes it is such a relief to return to something familiar. For me that's apples. Someday I'll actually count how many I've painted, but for now lets just say - lots! So when something else isn't working out and I'm feeling frustrated, I give myself a little confidence boost by painting something I know well.

I bought some apples during my recent (aforementioned) block. Apples are my comfort food because I've painted them ... uhhh, just a few times. But, wanting to do something new with them, I borrowed this slicing idea from an artist friend, Brenda Furgeson, who did a bunch of sliced pears recently. Thanks, Bren!

This is another older painting (from maybe a month ago) I found in my stacks today. I think that's all of them. But I remember painting it - two of my favorite things to paint - apples and bottles. I especially enjoyed the colorful shadows.

It's great to be back in the groove of painting again. I feel I do my best stuff once I've been steadily painting for a little while. Additionally, when I first get back to my studio I'm not sure exactly what to paint, but once I've done a few the ideas start flowing.

I'm pretty proud of the reflection of the apple in the cup here. What's funny, is if I hadn't pointed it out, you probably wouldn't have noticed it, right? And it's what I always tell my students. The subtle things, like reflections and reflected light - if you get them right, no one's going to tell you how great they are. But if you get them wrong, everyone will notice!

I was going through my paintings yesterday and found a few that I completely forgot to post. This is one I did back when I was boning up for my advanced workshop. This painting covered two tough subjects: white objects and flowers.

Tomorrow my son and I begin the long journey home. If nothing goes wrong (I hope I hope) we will be home late Friday night. Then a few days to recover from jet lag, then back to painting. I did get to paint some this trip, but my light broke mid-visit and we weren't able to get another one in time. All in all it has been a really lovely, needed vacation.

Here in Germany we continue to enjoy the snow. We spent yesterday in beautiful Freiberg. We didn't anticipate the after-Christmas sales and huge crowds seeking them, but had fun anyway.

I love these birds because they are so expressive. In my other paintings with them, I've had them stealing whatever they're with. This one is simply asking - "mine?" Appropriate, I think.

So with this cherry I painted the stem in last. I decided this worked best when the cherry (and stem) were small. In yesterday's painting the cherries were more prominent and if I had put the stems on last, over the white, they would have gone chalky fast. And if I had left a space for them, there would have been a small space between them and the white, which wouldn't have been as interesting. Works for me anyway.

More cherries AND a picture of the German market I wrote about yesterday. There was a hill nearby that we climbed (slippery) and at the top of it we had this view. Then Jacob (5) and I slid down in a very small fraction of the time it took to get up. Veil spas! (Much fun!)

Here is another painting from before I left for Germany. I am always up for painting something peeking out from behind glass - always fun. And here today we ventured out into the cold and snow to an outdoor Weihnachten (Christmas) Market. It was under a beautiful old bridge and everything was so spectacular it was unreal. Prima!

We are off to Germany tomorrow - back on the 31st. Unfortunately I won't be able to ship anything until after I get back and I apologize for the inconvenience! This will be my very first white Christmas (and my son's as well) and we are very excited about that and the trip in general. We'll take pictures and I'll be painting (inside) as well, plus I am ahead by a few, so expect a post in a few days, once I've recovered a bit from 15 hours in airplanes, 4 hours on trains and a 7 hour time difference. Argh.

We finished up the workshop here today in Louisiana. I usually only post photos of my kids working so I decided to post a couple of happy shots (they'll tell you I threatened them to smile "or else" but don't beleive a word they say). Debbie's glasses broke so she used an earring to weigh one side down ... "it's not a fashion statement" ...

Below are a couple more demos. One of my kids, Jerry, brought in this beautifully wrapped gift specifically for me to paint. It was a real challenge, but my favorite from the week.

At one point Anne grabbed my camera and insisted on a photo of me making my rounds, so here I am helping Martha with her 10-minute apples.

And here's my entire group of kids from this week. Can you tell it was cold? I suppose I can forgive them for all their whining and complaining since they took me out to dinner and generally treated me nice ... and of course there was wine. But really, they became like family and I was sad to see them go. Thanks ya'll!!

The workshop is going GREAT, here in Louisiana. Of course, they are complaining already, on the second day, that I am working them like slaves. But I keep telling them, it's for their own good. Just wipe those tears away and start again. Here are a couple of the sweeter (looking) ones working on value studies.
