This one was a challenge for a lot of reasons. I needed to redesign some things in the reference photo on my ipad before I even started. And then I ended up doing several passes on the painting itself, with days of thinking in between. It took a while, but I'm happy with the result. BTW, this is from my trip to Bisbee (and Lowell) Arizona last month.

At my recent workshop from Randy Sexton in Bisbee AZ, most of the class stayed at a very cool place called The Shady Dell (a vintage trailer court). Unfortunately by the time I signed up all the trailers were claimed, so my friends and I stayed elsewhere. But we painted at the motor court a couple of times. I painted this scene from life, but decided to do a second version at home (this one), because the first had some unsolvable issues. I wish I could have painted there more in better weather conditions.

Recently I met friends in Arizona and we took a workshop from Randy Sexton. We painted for several days around Bisbee, a very cool area. Unfortunately the weather wasn't ideal - cold, clouds in and out, and windy. But the camaraderie made up for it - we had a grand time! None of my paintings turned out, but I managed to get a few pictures when the sun came out. So between my "studies" and photos, I cobbled together a few paintings in the studio. Here's the first one.

Desert Oasis

I took the photo reference for this one in Tucson 2 weeks ago, at Catalina State Park. I used a lot of what I learned from the various landscape demos I saw at the Plein Air Convention, tried some new things, and some new brushes. And I'm pretty thrilled with the result! More on this soon...

I took the photo for this one years ago, in Sedona, AZ. My friend Penny and I were scoping out plein air locations for the next day, and for some reason that I can't remember, we were running around like crazy doing it. I never thought I'd use the photo, even though I really liked it, because it didn't seem dramatic enough. But I've been looking for subtlety lately, and this called out to me.

I just announced my workshop for Oregon next year. In case you missed it, here's all the info. Don't worry, there will be more, but I am cutting back. I will only be doing 6 next year total, rather than the 12 I've been doing a year for the last 6. I'll try to get the rest announced as soon as I can.

Meanwhile, I'm diggin' dapples! This is from an old photo reference I took in Arizona. I just heard tale of a ghost town about 2 hours NE of my house with lots of oldies, so my goal for this next week is to carve out some time to go there. Road trip!

I don't usually make a big deal of my birthday, but this year my husband posted a Daily Paintworks challenge in my honor. Between that and Facebook, I've gotten a huge response and I just want to say - WOW, and thank you all so much!!! And in honor of me getting old, I have painted this old and rusting truck. : ) Here's hoping 33 is the year I stop getting carded.

The painting is from Arizona, painted in Germany, but my body is here in Wisconsin. I'm pretty sure. And my kids seem awful nice but I think they're just buttering me up for something. I'm not sure what. Today they plied me with wine and ice cream, and yesterday it was fudge. They asked me today if I was going to complain about them on my website and I said "surely you jest," but I lie. They're awful. A bunch of complainers. They barely made it through the 10-minute paintings ... maybe it was the push-ups I made them do in between each one. ; )

Another scene from the Gold King Mine. Someday I will catch these crazy chickens in the sunlight. For some reason they roamed only in the shade. We tried to chase them around, but I only got a few blurry photos before they high-tailed it back into the shade.

Above is the last painting I'm proud enough to show from my trip to Sedona, another 8x8 truck from the Gold King Mine. I thought of this trip more as a vacation than anything, with some painting squeezed in. A much needed vacation, with some truly wonderful friends! Here we are at Tlaquepaque, posing by the giant pig (which the photographer cut off - oops): Mary Sheehan Whinn, me, Penny Lentz (dropped in for a couple of days at the end) and Kelley MacDonald. I decided to take some larger panels with me on this trip to see if I liked that better when painting outdoors. And I did enjoy it, though it took longer to paint, which made things a little trickier since the light changed so fast. This is one of the old trucks from the Gold King Mine.

On the third day we painted at Slide Rock. We had a couple of extra painting companions that day. We had a blast, but all I have to show for it is this photo of us: (James, Mary, me, Nancy & Kelley)

Sedona Waterfall - SOLD

The first part of our painting trip in Sedona accidentally fell on Memorial Day weekend. Most of the places we drove by were full to bursting so we settled on Grasshopper Point. There we found, at the bottom of a cliff, this nice, little waterfall. The other gals set up at the top, and I, being the daredevil I am, scaled to the bottom. Ok, so it was like 20 feet down, but still. While I was putting the first mark down, I heard a crash, and then brushes started raining down a few feet from me. My pal Kelley's box had blown over and she barely rescued it as it clung to a branch at the top of the cliff. All was saved, not to worry. Here is Kelley contemplating the near demise of her painting box.

This is another one from the Gold King Mine in Jerome, Arizona. From a photo. I REALLY wanted to paint it while I was there, but I knew it would be impossible. Pretty much anything in dappled light is impossible to paint live, in my opinion. Everything changes so fast as the sun moves across the sky. My favorite part about this one is the crack in the windsheild.

Well, you won't believe this but I completely forgot to take pictures AGAIN today - of the paintings from my trip to Lost Maples. So I am posting a figure painting I did a while back but completely forgot to post (geez - all this forgetting - you'd think I'm getting old) AND, as a sort of bonus/apology, the last of my trucks from Arizona. The truck is not for sale - rather, it will be displayed in California soon at Randy Higbee's upcoming 6x6 show (more about that later).

Beleive it or not, this view is looking downhill in Jerome. I'm not sure I quite pulled that off. But ... does it matter? If you're familiar with the area, the Flatiron Cafe/Coffeeshop is at the end of the sidewalk on the left.
