I just announced my workshop for Oregon next year. In case you missed it, here's all the info. Don't worry, there will be more, but I am cutting back. I will only be doing 6 next year total, rather than the 12 I've been doing a year for the last 6. I'll try to get the rest announced as soon as I can.

Meanwhile, I'm diggin' dapples! This is from an old photo reference I took in Arizona. I just heard tale of a ghost town about 2 hours NE of my house with lots of oldies, so my goal for this next week is to carve out some time to go there. Road trip!

First real quick, this is from a photo I took at the Gold King Mine in Jerome, AZ. Second, I've been on Facebook for a while, but I am now ON Facebook. The rose garden near the zoo was more than spectacular! Miles of roses ... ok, maybe not that much, but a lot of freakin' roses. The zoo was pretty awesome too. Today we saw a movie, wandered around downtown and played in the hotel's indoor pool. A pretty typical vacation. Today I am ready to go home, which I think is the mark of a perfect vacation - to stay just long enough to appreciate what you have at home.

I don't usually make a big deal of my birthday, but this year my husband posted a Daily Paintworks challenge in my honor. Between that and Facebook, I've gotten a huge response and I just want to say - WOW, and thank you all so much!!! And in honor of me getting old, I have painted this old and rusting truck. : ) Here's hoping 33 is the year I stop getting carded.

The painting is from Arizona, painted in Germany, but my body is here in Wisconsin. I'm pretty sure. And my kids seem awful nice but I think they're just buttering me up for something. I'm not sure what. Today they plied me with wine and ice cream, and yesterday it was fudge. They asked me today if I was going to complain about them on my website and I said "surely you jest," but I lie. They're awful. A bunch of complainers. They barely made it through the 10-minute paintings ... maybe it was the push-ups I made them do in between each one. ; )

Above is the last painting I'm proud enough to show from my trip to Sedona, another 8x8 truck from the Gold King Mine. I thought of this trip more as a vacation than anything, with some painting squeezed in. A much needed vacation, with some truly wonderful friends! Here we are at Tlaquepaque, posing by the giant pig (which the photographer cut off - oops): Mary Sheehan Whinn, me, Penny Lentz (dropped in for a couple of days at the end) and Kelley MacDonald. I decided to take some larger panels with me on this trip to see if I liked that better when painting outdoors. And I did enjoy it, though it took longer to paint, which made things a little trickier since the light changed so fast. This is one of the old trucks from the Gold King Mine.

On the third day we painted at Slide Rock. We had a couple of extra painting companions that day. We had a blast, but all I have to show for it is this photo of us: (James, Mary, me, Nancy & Kelley)

This is another one from the Gold King Mine in Jerome, Arizona. From a photo. I REALLY wanted to paint it while I was there, but I knew it would be impossible. Pretty much anything in dappled light is impossible to paint live, in my opinion. Everything changes so fast as the sun moves across the sky. My favorite part about this one is the crack in the windsheild.

Well, you won't believe this but I completely forgot to take pictures AGAIN today - of the paintings from my trip to Lost Maples. So I am posting a figure painting I did a while back but completely forgot to post (geez - all this forgetting - you'd think I'm getting old) AND, as a sort of bonus/apology, the last of my trucks from Arizona. The truck is not for sale - rather, it will be displayed in California soon at Randy Higbee's upcoming 6x6 show (more about that later).

Beleive it or not, this view is looking downhill in Jerome. I'm not sure I quite pulled that off. But ... does it matter? If you're familiar with the area, the Flatiron Cafe/Coffeeshop is at the end of the sidewalk on the left.

The owner of the Gold King Mine, Don, called these 2 the working girls. He explained why, but it was car specific and I can't remember. Sorry. But I thought they were super cool, especially in this dramatic morning light.

I'm off tomorrow for 5 days at Lost Maples State Park with my buddies Penny & Laurel. I am going to prepost some for when I'm gone - so as you won't miss me too much (I won't have my computer at all) : ) - and will post about the trip when I get home. This painting was done in the afternoon when suddenly the clouds appeared and everything went flat. I set up to paint these 3 trucks because they looked good without the light. Right before I finished the sun came back out, but only in the front because of the shadow of the mountain, and I decided it would still work (and maybe better) if I put the pink shafts of light in. So I did. : )

When I was set up to paint this I was very aware of a buzzing nearby. Upon exploration I found a hole in the hillside several feet from where I stood with bees streaming in and out. Luckily, my parents had a hive when I was growing up so I didn't ... you know, freak out or anything. And I didn't get stung.

On a less buggy note, one of my paintings is now on the cover of a book! Perishables by Tina Egnoski (see below).

I only did one close-up painting like this and now I wish I'da done more. And may do so still - from the gazillion reference photos I took. The reason I liked this particular truck is the yellow/turquoise combination - so cool.

We quickly moved on to the Gold King Mine just outside of Jerome, Arizona to paint old trucks. This place is literally a gold mine for artists ... artists who like to paint old trucks and stuff ... like me. : ) Don, the proprietor, is a kooky old guy - we enjoyed getting to know him. My painting buddy, James, just started a new blog where you can see his airplanes - and trucks too, soon.
