Hello! We are finally home from camping and, well it's one of those times we need a vacation from our vacation. : ) So I'm happy to still have some paintings left to post from my Sierra trip.

This was actually the very first one I did, or a version of it. From here on I will show you paintings that weren't 100% completed on site. I did some work after I got home, adjusting colors, values, shapes, etc. One problem we had out there, as I mentioned before, was constant mosquito's. My solution was to wear loose, long sleeve shirts and pants, and a mosquito net over my head, pretty much all the time. The net was black, so it affected how I saw a bit (though I forgot about it most of the time).

Honestly, this was my best "haul" of all our Sierra trips, and the only time I wore a net while I painted. So I'm considering wearing it every time I paint! What do you think? : )

Bedrock

You might ask, "Why go all the way up into the Sierra Nevada mountains just to paint a close-up of rocks?" And yet, this is one of my favorites from the trip. It was in a place I passed by just about every day on the way to one spot or another. But this day I happened to glance over, and the light was just so, with that little bush up at the top, and I was enchanted.

Here is a picture of the beginning of the mule train that carries our camping gear and food. We carry our art supplies, which are heavy enough. It was a 12 mile hike in this time, with a whole lotta up.

Rock Solid

This is another High Sierra plein air piece, done at the "upper pond." The water is pure snow melt. The snow it was melting from was literally less than 50 yards away, as well as the base of the tippy top of the mountain. Some of us drank the water straight, and some filtered just to be safe. Well, I'm off on another trip. But it's the last one!! For now anyway. The last in a flurry of trips that started for me in the spring. This one is a celebration, with a couple friends, of major landmarks - one being me turning 40 this year. We are off to Mexico for 6 days! And so I apologize that I won't be able to ship until the 17th.

Speaking of trips, this painting is from references I took in France this summer, outside a little town called Les Baux.

You can probably tell that this is another scene from Überlingen, in that it's almost the same spot as from yesterday's painting. I'm trying to go a little more abstract and less detail-y with my people scenes, and focus more on the colors and the shapes. I don't know why, but this really appeals to me!

Here's another scene from France. It didn't photograph perfectly because some of the darks have dried already and until I can varnish it, they will look a little chalky.

NEW ABSTRACT COLLAGES
I've just added a bunch of abstract collages to my Daily Paintworks "store." It took me a while to frame and photograph and all that.  I wanted to post them all at once so it would be possible for people to get enough for a grouping - I think they look SO good like that. Just Steps from the Courtyard

Today I picked up a new order of books - my little collections of 100 small paintings. I have a brand new book this year - vol. 8, and I think it looks super fine!

Because I have limited storage space at my house, I am only going to keep printing 5 books at a time, so I will only carry volumes 4-8 for now. I still have 8 copies of volume 3, so get them while they last.                              ORDER BOOKS HERE

Farm House

As promised, here is my last painting from the alpaca farm. I painted this house several times, but this was the only one I was really happy with. I want to point out, specifically, the little bit of palette knife work. It required mixing up a thicker pile of paint than I'm used to, which jerked me out of my "cheap" zone, but I did it!

Happy French Car

This was another one I did from one of my France reference photos. I just love the tiny, cute cars over there. For our artist caravan we rented the biggest cars they had, which were nothing compared to America's big cars/vans!

Here is a photo of a few of my kiddos from that workshop. They were supposed to be out taking photos, but I caught them slacking off. They were like, "Hey, we're in France!"

What to Wear in France

One day in France several students and I walked down from our chatteau into the village. This gal, Ann, looked especially lovely in her pink shirt walking through this passageway, so I asked her to walk through again while I took pictures. Thanks, Ann!

A Small Courtyard

I did a painting very similar to this as a demo for my class in France. I was really taken by this scene, which I happened upon while exploring the village below our chateau, and wanted another go at it. I'm not usually crazy about scenes without strong light, but this has enough built-in value shifts/contrast to make it inherently interesting.

Decomposition

I found this super cool scene in Taos last year. I was walking around this little neighborhood with my friend Tia, taking pictures. She took one look at this old car and said, "This looks just like a Carol Marine painting." Yep.

Labyrinth

I'm leaving tomorrow for Germany with my family. We'll be gone the entire month of November, so I won't be able to ship any paintings from now until December. My stepdaughter, Maddie, will remain here, and ship books for me.

This is a scene from California, up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. I've had lots of practice up there painting from life, but this one is from a photo I took a couple of years ago. You can see how I approached it from my process shots below. I ended up having to repaint the foreground a couple of times. Little tufts of grass are hard to paint!

Trees Galore

The title for this one is a joke because my friend Paul says I avoid putting trees in my paintings. Which is pretty true. He's the master of trees. I could learn a thing or two (or fifteen) from Paul Kratter.

Waterside

This is my first painting (that turned out) from our trip up into the Sierra Nevada mountains last week. There was a little waterfall just to the left and I tried painting that first, but it was a disaster. Despite that, and a few other failures, there were no major disasters, and we all had a wonderful time!

I did see two bears: one from the car driving in, and the other in our camp a couple of evenings, keen on getting our food. Fortunately he ran away when we yelled at him. He did manage to snag some instant coffee and a couple of days later we found a big sludgy pile of bear poop near camp. Poor guy must have had indigestion!

Top of the World

Here is another view from the top of our butte here in Eugene. I ended up working on it over two sessions. The rocks in the first version were ... pink. So I hauled it up a second time when it was dry and redid that and some of the rest. Which means it will need a coat of varnish before I ship, fyi. The little green bits at the front are poison oak, my sworn enemy. It's all over the place up there, actually, but somehow I've managed to avoid getting any on me this season (knock on wood), so far.

The Path

This was a total experiment. I decided it was the perfect subject for blocking in the whole thing and then putting the details in on top. As many of you know, this is not how I approach a still life. I am experimenting with lots of things.

Red Rock in Shadow

This is from Valley of Fire, in Nevada, which is the only place I got to paint on our big family trip I posted about last time. It was here we had THE BEST CAMPSITE EVER! And it was great because it was right in the middle of these very cool rocks. So all I had to do was roll out of the camper in the morning, walk about 50 yards, set up, and paint. This was about halfway through our trip, so the boys were ready for some downtime (no hiking).

Yesterday's title might have worked better for this one. Alas. This is a scene from Lake Tahoe, from a photo I took summer before last. My friend and I were roaming around a little resort with a bunch of cute cabins and paths and chairs. I'm not sure how to categorize the painting - landscape? At any rate, I'm quite happy with it. It's one of those that just painted itself.
