After the Ball

After several tries, I found for this one that the ribbon worked best if I painted the lightest lights first, and then the rest. It was too hard to get those brights on top of any other paint. But to do this I had to get the drawing just right before I started so that everything would go in the right place. And this was after needing about an hour to place and re-place the ribbon a million times before it looked good to me. Haha. Such a challenge!

This is another new Hobby Lobby purchase - ribbon. I love the challenge it presents. Plus it's great to use for presents. Ha.

Being a Maker

I grew up in a house of makers. My parents built their own (dome) house, shop, studio, etc. When they wanted a camper van they cut a hole in the top of our VW and built their own pop-up tent on top. My mother had an extensive garden, goats, and chickens, plus still has art projects going at all times. I could go on. And so when I met my husband and he was a maker too, it seemed perfectly normal. But in talking to all my married girl friends, I realize how lucky I am that he's handy. Most days you will find us making: paintings, websites, furniture, curtains, etc. It's an obsession. I love it.

When I set this up (which took about 15 years) I had NO idea (though you think I would, after so many paintings) how freaking HARD it was going to be! The painting part took about 15 years too. So, what I'm saying is, I aged a lot yesterday!! And I may have a little ptsd from the ribbon. But I'm still here.

FYI, I'll be out of town from (this Friday) 12.21.18 until 1.3.19, and won't be able to ship during that time.

Imagine receiving this little box during tea with a good friend. Ok, imagine having tea first. Having, like, high tea is something I've always wanted to do. With little crumpets? Not that I know what a crumpet is. And since I don't eat wheat I probably can't have crumpets. And don't crumpets sound like something muppets should have? Wait ... I think I got off topic.

I recently went to Michael's to get some things for knitting and while I was there I noticed their extensive ribbon collection! What was weird though, was the extensive LACK of wrapping paper. They had maybe 3 solids, but fortunately one was gold, which is always fun to paint.

I've started a new blog - A New Beginning - to post about our trip to Oregon and restarting our lives there.

Meanwhile, I'll keep posting here every few days with the remaining paintings I have from before the fire. Here's one of a pig I am very sad to have lost. I didn't even find the pieces of him in the rubble. Hopefully I'll find another one day. I hope to be up and running with the silly faces project by the 6th. If everything goes right we'll close on the new house on the 5th. I've gotten some really fabulous faces already - thank you to everyone who's emailed them!

More fun with ribbon. I realize I might have sounded a little cocky in yesterday's post - I hope everyone understands it was completely tongue in cheek. Ribbon is one of the most challenging things I've painted yet. I was kicking myself for the complexity of the setup, but I was also really happy with the result. I'm pretty darn pleased with this one too. My proudest moment is where the ribbon reflects in the white side (front) of the cup.

After my fun with the tissue paper (did I say crepe? ... heh heh) I decided to have a go with ribbon. And because it just wasn't complicated enough already, I put it inside a metal bowl. And then just to make it at least a bit of a challenge I put the whole thing on glass. Easy as pie.

Precious Plums - SOLD

Apparently the bugs that have been biting me (while doing plein air here in Arizona) are Buffalo Gnats. Not only are they annoying when they swarm around my face while I paint, I wake up each night with new welts that are amazingly itchy! And scratching them only make them more itchy. I had more luck today with the trucks. I will post them when I get home, so for now please accept more plums. And I thought I'd mention - they are teensy plums that I got from a neighbor down the road - he grew them on his plum tree. These plums don't have cleavage (see comment on yesterday's post).
