Brightens Up the Room

Click Here to Bid - 10x10in. - oil on panel

Ok, this is the last rose painting for now. Also featuring a new metal pitcher I got on ebay. Very simple but I think it adds a lot.

Gathering

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. - oil on panel

This is my example for this month's Daily Paintworks challenge: The Gathering Challenge. You know, since it's the time of year where we get together. The prompt is pretty simple. Please submit your work! You don't have to be a member. : )

Sweet Nothings

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. - oil on panel

When I bought these roses I was most attracted to the fact that some were pinkish, and some leaned more peachy. I find those kind of analogous colors incredibly yummy.

Busy Bee

Missoula has a tiny public rose garden. Nothing compared to the great ones I had access to in Eugene and Portland, but at least it's something. Something, anyway, to this very busy bee.

Sitting Pretty

Click Here to Purchase - $750 - 26x24in. - oil on panel (unframed)

Here is one of the larger paintings I mentioned that I'd like to move in order to make room for new work. The reference came from a rose garden in Oregon, though I can't remember if it was in Eugene or Portland. I made a lot of trips to both - spent countless, happy hours photographing every rose that spoke to me. Ahh, good memories!

After the Ball

Click Here to Purchase for $200 - 6x6in. - oil on panel

After several tries, I found for this one that the ribbon worked best if I painted the lightest lights first, and then the rest. It was too hard to get those brights on top of any other paint. But to do this I had to get the drawing just right before I started so that everything would go in the right place. And this was after needing about an hour to place and re-place the ribbon a million times before it looked good to me. Haha. Such a challenge!

Rose Tea

Click Here to Purchase for $200 - 6x6in. - oil on panel

My town recently got a Hobby Lobby. We had them in Texas, so I knew to expect to get lost inside, and I did. I remembered a sizeable flower section, and wasn't disappointed. Fake flowers are getting better all the time. I like them sometimes in a still life because I can do things like this and they don't get all slumpy.

These two lovebirds decided to perform a duet. There were quite a few onlookers.

Encore

Well, the roses convinced me they needed to finish with a bang, so here they are, numbers 12, 13 and 14! Give it up.

Roses Forward

We are now at 11 of the dozen! Just one more. How will he pose?

Three for Ye

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. - oil - "Three for Ye"

Including these 3 roses, I have now painted 8 of the dozen. I used a different light for this one - a softer LED rather than the flood bulb I often use. It makes the transitions more subtle, and the shadow edges softer.

Two Poses

I'm imagining these two at the Oscars, posing for the cameras in their "naked dresses". How scandalous!

Cutting Roses

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. - oil. - "Cutting Roses"

I haven't painted roses in a while, so I bought myself a dozen. And my goal is to paint all 12. : ) Two down...

Companion Roses

I think this is the first time I've painted roses from a reference photo I didn't take myself. The lighting was soft, as opposed to the sun-shiny roses I often paint, which was challenging. I found myself channeling Richard Schmid, though you probably can't tell.

Pinkiness

If these roses were royalty each would be addressed as "Your Pinkiness."

I made a little video of this one. You can see it here or on youtube. It's better with sound. : )

Rose Balloons

Click Here to Buy (22x36in. - OIL - $1100 - click image to enlarge
free domestic shipping)

I've recently done some new, larger paintings and need to move some older ones to make room. This is an old photo here to the right, so a lot of these are already sold, but you can see "Rose Balloons" there in the middle. I figured this might be a good size reference. Because 22x36 is pretty big (compared to what I normally do).

Also, I've halved prices on some still lives that have been sitting around a while in my "available" category. If they don't sell at these prices, I'm going to paint over them. This is not a threat, just me accepting reality. Ha! : )

Snuggle Up Rose

Click Here to Bid (5x7in. - starts at $1)

I raided my old rose files for this one. I have to admit, I am sad to leave behind the Eugene and Portland rose gardens. Alas. But I have a feeling there will be plenty in Missoula (and Montana in general) to make up for it.

Adjacent

And here is my last texture-y rose(s), for now. Today I experimented with palette knife on a people scene. I'll show you that soon.

Shadow Roses

Click Here to Bid (6x6in. - starts at $100)

Here's my second attempt at roses with more texture. I took a detail photo so you can see what I'm talking about. For this one I mostly used brushes and a palette knife. I'm also exploring with rollers (brayers?) and squeegees. I've had some luck with each, but so far can't achieve anything consistent. But I'm having fun trying!
