Subjects without much color are a great way to focus on value. I literally made a little chart on my palette as I painted that went from 1 (the lightest - in this case the highlights) to 6 (the darkest darks). Then I just squinted and compared values to see where they repeated themselves. For example the shadow value between the florescent tubes (I called this value 4) repeats in the shadow cast by the incandescent bulb. Once I had the masses blocked in, I could go over them and make small adjustments for subtlety.

Here is another one where I started with the title and let that inform the composition. It was pretty easy for me to come up with something to go with this particular title. It has creative angst written all over it, which of course, I am intimately familiar with. : )

When I set this up (which took about 15 years) I had NO idea (though you think I would, after so many paintings) how freaking HARD it was going to be! The painting part took about 15 years too. So, what I'm saying is, I aged a lot yesterday!! And I may have a little ptsd from the ribbon. But I'm still here.

FYI, I'll be out of town from (this Friday) 12.21.18 until 1.3.19, and won't be able to ship during that time.

This is the painting I did for my apple demo ArtByte. I picked apples because I am most comfortable with them, and they seemed like a good subject to start with. I envision doing quite a few more, all on a different subjects: grapes, orange slices, glass, roses, white cups, etc ... even silly faces.

Speaking of ArtBytes, thank you all for the great comments and reviews you've left. I was so nervous about putting them out there, and I don't think I could have gotten a better reception. Thank you thank you!!!

This painting was inspired by conversations with my good pal, Karen, about her life in a cube and the endless meetings she must attend. It sounds terrible. And boy am I glad I get to paint all day instead.
