Light in the Forest
On my last day in Mendocino, my friend and I drove down to the redwoods. She had a particular park in mind, but it was closed, so we drove on until we found a logging road. It had an ominous "no trespassing" sign, but we, uh...kind of went in anyway. Seeing that it was late afternoon, and no one was about, we set up and painted. My painting was really terrible. I knew the scene was going to change fast, so I hurried and did a terrible job on the composition. But the colors were good so I took what I did home as a study, and used it and photos to create this one in my studio. I'm SO glad I had the study because the colors in my photos were dull and lifeless. I learned a TON from this, and highly recommend the process.

A Remembered Walk
sold
The last place we lived in Texas was in a forest. We loved to take walks in our neighborhood, which basically looked like this. The trees were mostly Blackjack Oak and Loblolly Pine. It was very unique for Texas, and despite it being very hot for half the year, we loved it. Unfortunately this is the very forest that burned down three years ago, along with our house. I am told there is only a small part of the forest left. It's very sad. I did this from a photo.

The Path Less Taken
sold
Last weekend my family and I went on a little "adventure," trying to find access to a particular creek up in the mountains that a friend had told me about. We eventually saw the creek, but couldn't find an easy way to it, as weird as that might sound, but we did have lots of fun along the way! I took tons of pictures (because while my family is great, they are not patient enough to wait while I paint outside). When we got home my son asked to see them. When he saw the reference for this one he said, "Wow, great light!" So I painted it. And I love how it turned out.
Here's another peek inside my book. This one is the beginning of chapter 5, about color mixing. -->
And speaking of, tomorrow I'll be interviewed about the making of (my book) on Artists Helping Artists! Give it a listen live, at 9am PST, or listen to the recording later. I'll try not to make a fool of myself. : )
