Ginger

I always thought it was funny that a person with orange hair is called a "redhead." It's orange. I mean... So if a cat is orange, what is it called? I would consider changing my title...

Perched on Dots

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. - oil on panel

I've had a cold for a few days. The pressure in my head when I become horizontal makes it hard to sleep, so even though I feel crummy, I've mostly kept myself upright and busy, at least during the day. But I tried to paint yesterday, and what I found is that the crumminess was too distracting, and probably the exhaustion from not sleeping well, and nothing I painted turned out. Luckily I'm still ahead with my paintings, so here's a cute kitty from better days.

Shocking

This tiger had a surprised look that I wanted to try and capture. It's surprising, I know.

Just Looking, Thanks

Portrait of a cheetah in the wild. Looking for potential food. Not acting. Yet. Just like when I go into a clothing store. "Just looking, thanks."

Oh the Indignity

This isn't my cat. I wouldn't do this to a cat of mine. Because I wouldn't want to die in my sleep.

Apprehension

Click Here to Bid - 6x8in. - oil on panel

My husband is allergic to cats, so we don't have any, but I grew up with them. I found the reference for this one on one of the royalty-free sites online. I love the pose and the expression. Classic cat. Such great animals.

This was a fun one to paint. I mean, that tongue! I just couldn't lose.

Almost

I found the image for this cat on one of those royalty-free sites. I felt it needed something, so I searched around for images of butterflies. Then I used my ipad and an art app to experiment with size and placement. The hard part was finding a butterfly in a similar light.

Lying in Wait

They look so cute and innocent when they lay still like that, but you know they'll pounce as soon as they see any weakness.

Act Normal

When I first saw this cat I thought it was the most like a dog a cat had ever looked. But now I've looked at it so much I can't see that anymore. Can you?

Everything about this painting was like a puzzle, with no clear order of operation. A challenge, for sure.

Ever Vigilant

Another cat. I especially had fun playing with the colors in the background. It was just a mid gray in the reference photo, but I find it far more interesting to make it out of grays that lean a little bit towards several different colors. Sometimes anyway. : )

Mr. Green Eyes

In my experience it's much harder to paint an animal in this kind of soft light rather than direct. Most of the time anyway. I guess I should just say - this was really hard to paint!

This one is my personal favorite of late. And I'll leave you with this - yes I am heading off on another trip. Yes, I just came back from one. 😂 Happy fall everyone! (I'll be home Nov 5th.)

In case you missed it, I have released my

It includes tons of instruction - basically everything I know about painting animals - plus TWO full demos - this cat, and the owl I posted recently - with voiceovers. The cost is $15, and you can view it at your own pace, and as many times as you want, forever.

Tigerific

I've had several people ask for a tutorial about painting animals. This is something I'm excited to get started with, but I'm wondering if you have any specific questions or things you'd like to know. Any input would really help, and I thank you in advance!

I Double Dare You

Click Here to Bid (6x8in. - Oil - starts at $100)

Neck update: I was concerned that something was wrong with my recovery from neck surgery. I was still having a lot of pain 4 months out, but I was also experiencing some strange symptoms that really concerned me. So I got another MRI and met with my neurosurgeon, and he assured me it was all picture perfect. Because I had nerves that were being squashed by a herniated disc for years before the surgery, the nerves will be angry for a while longer, until they heal. Since that meeting with my doc I have a lot less fear, and the very next day started feeling better physically. Go figure!

And I have even more good news. Last week I took some photos of a few small still life setups and painted from the photos. It was a very interesting experience, with some unexpected pros and cons. I'll talk about that when I post the paintings. But then yesterday I tried painting a still life from actual life and --- it worked! It hurt some to look back and forth like I do, but not so much I can't do it again. So, yay! Life is slowly getting back to normal and that makes me so happy! Next up, pickleball. : )

I Dare You

I love cats, but my whole family is allergic, including me now too apparently. I grew up with them but every time I go home now I get congested within about 5 minutes. This one looks pretty menacing, but that's cats.

There is a but in every one of those sentences, but oh well.

Lion King

Click Here to Bid (8x8in. - oil - starts at $100)

When I was coming up with a title for this, the words lion and king kept coming up in my head, I think because this guy is so regal looking. When I finally remembered it was also the name of a famous movie (duh), I thought, oh I can't use that, it's taken. But that's not a thing! Because if every title had to be unique, we would have run out a long time ago. This is unfortunately a real problem with domain names, which is something my husband and I were trying to brainstorm recently. How are we going to fix that problem?!

Kit Kat

Even though I found the reference for this on Pixabay, he reminds me of my grandma's cat, Kit. Except Kit was much, MUCH fatter.
