I found the image for this cat on one of those royalty-free sites. I felt it needed something, so I searched around for images of butterflies. Then I used my ipad and an art app to experiment with size and placement. The hard part was finding a butterfly in a similar light.

Even though I found the reference for this on Pixabay, he reminds me of my grandma's cat, Kit. Except Kit was much, MUCH fatter.

I painted from the same reference photo last year, but in gouache (this one's oil). You can see I had a completely different interpretation.

For the oil version I experimented by putting down a bright yellow ground the day before, with acrylic.
