"Simple Breakfast 4" - SOLD

It took me a long time to figure out the usefulness of gray, and then more time to figure out how to make it. Gray is useful because it allows the other colors to sing. You make it - well, there are lots of ways, but my way is to mix blue, red and yellow, and generally white. This way you end up getting a large variety of grays, which is more interesting in my opinion. That versus mixing just black and white or burnt umber, ultramarine and white, or gray straight from a tube.

Great composition and brushwork, as usual Carol. And I love the foreshortened spoon.

My favorite of the series. The "hot" orange wedges did it for me and that spoon at the most difficult angle. Love it!!!

I love this breakfast series. What's on the table that's so reflective?

Wow. The oranges sing against these grays.

Recently, I realized the same thing with gray in my landscapes. I like the rhythm the orange colors create in this painting.

I just listened to your interview on the "Artists Helping Artists" Blog. Thank you for being so generous and relating your advice and experiences! You inspired me to begin painting years ago both by the beauty of your work and because you are a mother too (in fact I think our boys are about the same age).I truly appreciate how much you give back, thank you!

Hi Carol,
I really enjoy your blog, it and your paintings are one of the reasons I took up daily painting this year.
Anyway, since you are talking about gray I thought I would share one of my favorite ways to make them from Kevin Macpherson's book, simply mix all of the color left on your palette (in your mixing area) when you are done painting for the day. It's also a great way to "re-use" your paint.

Every one of these in your Breakfast series is absolutely incredible! I can't get enough of that saturated orange and 1000 different wonderful grays. Perfection!

Your greys are lovely, and they do make your other colors sing. This is a gorgeous painting, Carol. It makes me want to eat an orange, and also makes me wish for more sunny days.
