Last week I went to the Umpqua river with a couple of painting buddies. We had gotten permission to paint on some private property, without really seeing the whole thing first, and when we got there we were pleasantly surprised to find not only that no bush-whacking was required, but we had a private, (quiet) prime view of the river! I stood on a lovely little slice of bank to paint this, all by myself, in pure and total bliss.

On another note, I did try to get pictures of my palette to show that thing I mentioned...about the ordered palette. But I have to admit my ordering fell apart before I got too far, and therefore I abandoned my picture taking pretty quickly. (more on that soon)

On a whole other note, I painted the ground (underpainting) purple (with ultra blue and aliz crimsom, and mineral spirits) because of the dominance of green in the scene, and was quite pleased with the result.

Chuck Mate - #2000

And here is (drum roll please) my 2,000th daily painting! I have a very good friend who wears these sorts of shoes often (when she wears shoes). Her daughter is just going into college, and due to some pretty huge issues that have come up for their family, I can imagine the funds are a bit tight for them right now. And so the proceeds from this painting are going a tiny way towards getting the sweet little gal through college.

Seeking the Light

These flowers are about done for now, but they sure lasted a while. I love the subtle pinks, especially where they go in and out of the light.

Our Time is Up

I hope everyone had a lovely holiday! I myself ate too much, once again. It's nice to have a small reprieve before the resolutions of the new year come and I have to run 15 miles every day the whole year to work it off. Until then, pass the fudge, please.

These pears were tough. I painted them three times before they looked presentable. But in the end I think it was worth it.

Casual Corner

I've been under the weather this week. I don't know if it's that or just my bad luck, but I've been doing a lot of wipers lately. This one though ... I feel positively redeemed. I like it a lot. It's always such a good feeling when a painting works out, especially in the middle of a dry spell.

I will be announcing a new workshop next week, Thursday, 11/21/13, at 7pm PST (that's west coast time). The workshop will be in March, '14, here in Oregon.

And now for something different. When I was growing up my last name was Leinweber. I know. We lived in the Texas hill country on 7 acres, and had a dirt driveway with large puddles when it rained. We had one particularly large puddle that we called Lake Leinweber, and when it was full my sister and I used to strip down and "swim" in the lake, getting completely muddy in the process. I'm sure my parents have pictures somewhere. This painting has absolutely nothing to do with any of that except that it starts with a large puddle ... but that's enough, right?

This setup seemed a little too complicated for a 6x6 inch canvas, so I painted it a little bigger. I loved the light on these apple slices and the little highlight on the knife. Little things.

Table Set For One

I've had this idea for a while to make a t-shirt with something catchy on it about daily painting and/or maybe something about "Carol's kids" or whatnot, but an idea has not fully formed in my head. And honestly I've been thinking about it for a while. Which is just sad. So my friend/artist Sarah suggested I hold a contest and ask for ideas, and give free t-shirts out to the top 3 idea-givers. This is another one from a photo I took in San Francisco recently. It was actually the very first picture I took, on the first day, right down the street from our hotel, in the morning. The sun was just coming up over on the right, bouncing off some of the buildings on the left, making everything else glow. So cool.

I have added 3 new pages of information from 3 more artists to my block ArtByte! Many thanks to everyone who has contributed. I've actually gotten quite a lot out of what everyone else wrote.

Tomorrow my husband and I are driving to San Francisco in order to do some research for my upcoming (April) workshop there. It's going to be a grueling task, I'm sure, wandering around the beautiful streets (in the sun no less!), taking pictures, exploring, eating good food, but these are the prices we pay for art. Our only concern is getting through the mountain pass there and back! IF we get there alive, I will post some updates on my Facebook page (which, by the way, I don't believe you have to be ON Facebook to see).

Miranda, Bored

Last night I went to a figure session with my friends Sarah and Gabriella (I posted pics of us on my Facebook page). It was a 3-hr session and about halfway through I completely wiped the face. Our model, Miranda, is very attractive and my first attempt made her look like a monster. I wasn't happy with my second attempt either, until the last 20 minutes, when it all came together. Even though the result still doesn't do Miranda justice, I'm happy with it.

I got so carried away with tomatoes in this composition I had to upgrade my canvas size! This one is 8x8 inches. It seemed huge! And what's funny is one of my very first paintings was 6x8 feet!!!

I borrowed this bunny from my friend James. When I first started painting every day I did a few stuffed animals and then completely forgot about it. Now I remember why I enjoyed it! I will be on the lookout for some good animals at the thrift store next time I go.
