"Iris Shadows" --- n/a

I bought these irises yesterday for a larger painting when they were still closed up. I really liked them that way, but when I came into my studio today and found them open they had a whole different appeal. What a crazy flower. I fought with the composition but am happy with the way it ended up. I had time to do 2 today, which is good since tomorrow is a big painting day, so I will post the second tomorrow.

I saw my first iris of the year in a nearby garden yesterday and stood looking at it wondering why on earth it was out already! I think the warm weather during January had got it fooled.

I like the way you've got them in a short vase - I've never thought of cutting the stems down - but they look good like that.

Dear Carol, Thank you for showing your set up again. Some of your paintings look like you are looking straight down on the subject and I couldn't figure out how you painted that way--that would hurt your neck! I guess the set up must tilt a little or you lower it so you can see down inside the cups and stuff or you super glue things in place. Ha Ha. Whatever, I really appreciate you sharing your expertise. Thank you so much.

You won the fight with the composition!! This seems more complex (and slightly "looser") than your other small paintings. I like it, and continue to be impressed with how fast, steadily and productively you work. Especially with a person in the house who may or may not be napping and cooperative. Attagirl!

I really like the composition. The shadow's look great and so do your loose brush strokes!

Carol, I love the economy of this--especially in the vase. Always inspiring!
