Sierra Rocks

Up in the high Sierras there are many, many big slabs of white granite. I love the dichotomy of the near slabs and the far mountains. With a few trees in between for contrast.

Rock Solid

This is another High Sierra plein air piece, done at the "upper pond." The water is pure snow melt. The snow it was melting from was literally less than 50 yards away, as well as the base of the tippy top of the mountain. Some of us drank the water straight, and some filtered just to be safe. Here's Michele, getting her sketch down:

High Sierra

Well, we survived the mountains, but only barely. No bears or mountain lions. And though we saw lots of smoke from the fires around us, we never saw flames. Unfortunately the only disaster was a fall at the end, on the hike out. My new buddy Paul Kratter fell down a steep, slippery section of trail, dislocated his patella and broke his femur. The poor guy had to be hauled out by helicopter.

Here's our cast of characters (left to right, photo taken at the beginning of the trip): Aimee Erikson, Ernesto Nemesio, me, Bill Cone, Lori Putnam, Suzie Baker, Paul Kratter. More photos and paintings to come!
