When I was teaching my workshop recently in Apex, NC, I wandered some around the neighborhood of the airbnb where I was staying and took a few photos. My goal is always to keep my eyes peeled for anything and everything that appeals to me. It's like a treasure hunt that way. If instead I have my mind set on - old cars - for example, I'll miss other stuff. And I'll be disappointed if I don't find any old cars. This time I found these luscious roses in the morning sun with a white picket fence backdrop. Happy happy.

Technically there's pink in some of these, but it's still the red family. In fact it's the variations within the colors that excite me - including adjacent colors. Maybe that's why red has been so challenging for me - I don't have a lot of variety in my red things, in color or value. I think I'll try green next.

I did 5 of these red themed paintings, but only 3 worked out. I found it quite challenging to make an all red composition work. I mean, obviously I added some white things for contrast, but still it was hard. I recommend the challenge! And guess what - the challenge for Daily Paintworks this month just happens to be a Color Theme Challenge, just like this. : )

I recently posted a small blue series. Here is the first of my red series.

We are home early from camping. It turns out that weather is unpredictable. Who knew. But here are a couple of photos from Utah when it was nice.

A fabulous artist, and good friend, Cathleen Rehfeld, sometimes paints on black gessoed boards. I was so inspired by a recent painting of hers that I decided to try it myself! I will admit I've had as many failures with it so far as successes, but this one worked. At least I think so. : )

NEW BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT! I didn't put out a new book at the end of last year (like I usually do) because of my surgery and recovery. But I had plenty of paintings, so I decided to go ahead and do it a little late. I just picked up a big box of volume 9's from the printer!! -->

I only like to carry five volumes at a time, so I am phasing out volume 4, which I have put on sale until they are gone.

For some reason this is the only one so far (of my one color series) that came somewhat easily. And it's my favorite. I painted yellow today too, but I think I'm going to give it another try tomorrow. What sucks is that often, the paintings that are the most painful, are also not very good. You'd think it would be the other way around - that the hard work would pay off in the end. Alas.

I was very happy to find these shoes the other day at Goodwill. I had some pink ones when I was a kid. They were awesome. As for painting them, the laces were especially fun/challenging!

I have been painting less the last few days because we've had a visit from our granddaughter (Nina) and family - unfortunately leaving in the morning. : (
