Hey That's Not Coffee!

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. - oil on panel

Today I forgot how to paint. It was a disaster. Luckily I'm ahead with my paintings, so I still had something to post.

Lately I've actually been way ahead with my paintings, and I'm finding a pretty huge benefit to this (in addition them being dry and ready to ship): by the time I post a painting, I am far less emotionally involved. If I decide - well, this one really just isn't up to par, it doesn't slay me like it would if I made the same judgement call right after I painted it. And you end up seeing only the work I am most proud of.

Power of the Flower

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. - oil on panel

I just did an AI image search on this painting to see if it would identify the kind of flower (even though it's just a fake one, haha). It says, "The artwork is a still life by artist Carol Marine," and identifies the flower as a "sunflower," which I've painted a lot of, and it showed examples. Obviously it got the artist right (which I probably shouldn't be surprised by? even though I am), but I'm not sure about the flower. Maybe a cone flower? Thoughts about any of this?

Edible Flower

I recently volunteered to help some family move halfway across the country. It was my job to drive the 26-ft truck, hauling a car behind it. Before I left, my friends all asked, "but ... why are you doing this?" I didn't have an answer except, "... it could be fun?"

And it was! Even though tons of things went wrong. including the truck breaking down and having to completely un- and re-load into a new truck, and it raining while everything was out on the pavement. And pulling into a hotel one night only to realize there was no way out and no way to turn around. Oh, I've got stories. But it was an ADVENTURE (with capital letters). A chaotic, exhausting, laugh-about-it-later bonding experience none of us will ever forget.

I'm trying to look at my art like this too. If I only ever do what is safe and easy, not only is it boring, but I never land on anything new. Being adventurous is hard and scary, but I'm trying to embrace it. Saying YES more often. Jumping into the deep end.

I still don’t show you most of the messy results. But what I learn in those risky, “why-am-I-doing-this” moments absolutely feeds the pieces you do eventually see.

So I’m leaning into it more: more yeses, more experiments, more willingness to let things go sideways. Because even when the truck breaks down in the rain… sometimes you still end up with a story worth telling.

(And occasionally, a painting worth keeping.)

Brightens Up the Room

Ok, this is the last rose painting for now. Also featuring a new metal pitcher I got on ebay. Very simple but I think it adds a lot.

Rose is Single Again

You might think this isn't very different from the other rose paintings I posted recently, but anytime the scene includes reflections like this, the challenge of painting it goes WAY up. It almost broke me.

Dive into Pink

This summer I went kayaking with a buddy on a little lake in the area. To my delight it was half covered in water lily's, and they were all blooming! At first I was trying to be polite and just enjoy the kayaking with my friend. But eventually I asked if she minded if I took a few pictures with my phone. She said "sure!" and joined me. We found quickly that the trick was to propel yourself into the lily pads, which quickly made it very difficult to paddle, but get yourself right near a flower, without overshooting. It was quite a challenge! But we enjoyed it, and I came away with a few good pictures to paint from. Here's the first one.

Busy Bee

Missoula has a tiny public rose garden. Nothing compared to the great ones I had access to in Eugene and Portland, but at least it's something. Something, anyway, to this very busy bee.

Open for Business

Peonies might just be my favorite flowers. I have planted a few in my garden, and fortunately the deer don't touch them (they eat everything else!). I spent a frantic few days photographing the flowers this year - both on the plants and inside in jars - with the idea that I would paint them later. It was frantic because they change so fast - opening and closing on a whim, and then changing color as they get older. But I love them, as do the bees, hence the title.

Loyal Subjects

Small cups (and vases) are especially loyal to the sunflower queen. Don't ask me why. They give me all kinds of trouble.

Draped in Purple

Full disclosure: this one is actually just under 10 inches tall. By about 1/8 inch. But it's one of my favorites of late. I've really enjoyed having it in my studio.

Join the Circus

I bought the little stripey cup on Temu. It's my only purchase using the site, and I wasn't crazy about it. But the cup is fine. It comes with a matching saucer, and I've tried painting them together several times, but it never works out. I'll get it eventually.

Speaking of bad purchasing experiences, if you enjoy sewing and are considering purchasing patterns on Etsy, beware! Apparently there are a bunch of pattern scams, and I fell for one with my first purchase. After many frustrating hours, I realized the pattern was physically impossible to complete. Here's a video I found about how to avoid these scams. Us makers have to stick together!

How Do I Stack Up?

Recently I hosted a book group dinner at my house, and one of my friends brought me a bouquet of white mums. I decided I had to paint a few. Here's the first. Thank you, Colleen!

Shine on, Rosie

Something funny is that 9x12 is a super standard size, but I've only done it ONE other time in my life! Haha.

Yearning for Summer

Here's another big one that I used a ton of palette knife on, so there's a lot of texture. I'm including a few close-up photos of some particularly juicy bits. So fun to work with!

Sitting Pretty

Here is one of the larger paintings I mentioned that I'd like to move in order to make room for new work. The reference came from a rose garden in Oregon, though I can't remember if it was in Eugene or Portland. I made a lot of trips to both - spent countless, happy hours photographing every rose that spoke to me. Ahh, good memories!

Rose Tea

Click Here to Purchase for $200 - 6x6in. - oil on panel

My town recently got a Hobby Lobby. We had them in Texas, so I knew to expect to get lost inside, and I did. I remembered a sizeable flower section, and wasn't disappointed. Fake flowers are getting better all the time. I like them sometimes in a still life because I can do things like this and they don't get all slumpy.

Take Your Turn

Click Here to Buy for $200 - 6x6in. - oil on panel

For almost half a year I have been dealing with a health issue that has greatly affected my life. I have been seeing doctors but they are so far baffled by my symptoms. Fortunately I am still able to paint, but that is just about all. Recently I made the hard decision to cancel my workshop that would have happened this summer, and I'm so sorry to those of you who were signed up for that. Recently I was referred to the Mayo Clinic and will hopefully get some answers there.

Distracted Rose

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. - oil on panel - starts at $100

This rose isn't bored - she's just playing it cool. The cups are starting to talk about other things. The spoon is still a dedicated admirer.

Visiting Rose

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. - oil on panel - starts at $100

Wherever the roses go they seem to attract attention. What will my dishes do when the roses fade? I might have to hold therapy sessions.
