Sunset in the City
I took the photo reference(s) for this when I was teaching in San Francisco last year. My class had been taking pictures in the downtown area and I decided to walk back to my airbnb apartment rather than catch a ride. Along the way the sun went down and I got a whole series of wonderful shots. I could never capture the nice light on the buildings and the sky in the same shot, so I used several photos to create this scene. My goal is to do this one again bigger, at some point.

looks almost like a fire ...
nice work
I really like the look of this one, Carol. I'd love to see it done larger, too. Don't you feel compelled to get to it right away, or are you working on other large paintings at the moment?
Do you paint these in one day like your still life art? It looks like there is so much more detail, for me it would take longer.
Thanks! Yes, I have lots of larger painting ideas at the moment. I AM anxious to get started, but I have to figure out some storage problems first. My studio is too small! But I'll figure it out. : )
Hi Annmarie! Yes, I paint almost everything in one go (alla prima). That said, these little cityscapes (and/or anything with people in them) definitely take longer than the still lifes. : )
This street scene is so good. They mysterious light at that time of day, the composition, the colors!
Just listened to your interview on Artists Helping Artists! Great conversation...thanks so much for sharing your thoughts.
The sky is outstanding in this painting. May I ask what color of oils you used on the very light blue?
Judith
Thank you Linda, Amy and Judy! Judy, I definitely used some combination with phthalo blue for the top part. : )
