In the Flow

This was an experiment that I think TOTALLY worked. If I do say so myself. Which I am.

I took the photo reference for this when I was at Sweet Creek earlier this year with my painting buddies, Sue and Patti. I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it. I had the idea to go sort of abstract, using the shapes of the rocks as a guide for the composition. And that's pretty much how I started out, exaggerating colors here and there and making everything blocky like I do. I think it didn't end up being very abstract, but I love it anyway.

Using hardboard as a painting base worries me as there a lot of chemicals used in it's manufacture that could interact with oil or acrylic paint. Why do you use it rather than canvas boards does it concern you?

Yes! It totally works, I'm drawn the hiccups of color and the pops of contrasting colors together - so exciting!

I think the little bits of saturated blue really captures the movement of the sky.

Thanks everyone!

Neil, the Ampersand boards I use are completely archival. I also REALLY like the surface! I much prefer it over canvas or canvas boards.

Anonymous, I posted the reference photo for you to see. : )

This is a beautiful example of simplification. You captured the essence of this scene with such elegant economy. I'm absolutely impressed with this painting!
