And Breakfast

Click Here to Bid - 6x8in. - oil on panel

This is another object I borrowed from my friend Patti - the ampersand. It had a lot of neat reflections in it, but also reflected a lot of funny light everywhere. I used my artistic license and left some of it out. My guess is you can't tell?

The Last Two Yolks

I feel like with every painting I get closer to capturing the essence of things. The trick is to see them as abstract shapes, actually, to see the whole thing as interconnected abstract shapes that don't necessarily end where the objects end. Look at the left side of the egg shell - it melds right into the plate. And shadows often bleed into each other, with the edge sometimes disappearing altogether. If I see all this as a series of puzzle pieces, without my brain getting too involved, then I can see what I need to paint. It's taken 25 or so years to get this far, and I'm sure I have much still to learn!

Eggs and Juice

Can you tell the brand of orange juice even though the word is completely suggested? Furthermore, can you tell if it's the pulp or non-pulp kind? ; )

Just a reminder that I'm giving away a print of this old car painting on Wednesday (2/21/24). I'll choose randomly from anyone signed up for my newsletter. : )

Plethora of Eggs

Eggs have a tendency to roll away if they're just placed on a flat surface. That makes it hard to pose them unless they're in containers. I bet you never thought of that. ; )

Two Egg Breakfast

Click Here to Bid (6x6in. - OIL - starts at $100)

A while back I bought a few patterned cloths I found that I thought might make good backgrounds. I forgot how complicated they were to paint, especially coming in and out of shadows!! But it was a good challenge, and I'll definitely do them again ... sometime. : )

Fresh Breakfast

One of the suggestions my OT (occupational therapist) made for my work environment was pretty simple - take more regular breaks. When I get into a zone I will work for many hours without even realizing it, so that's a problem. I thought about setting a timer, but that's so disruptive, so I decided instead to break at more natural moments. It goes something like this for a small painting:

come up with the composition - break - draw it on my panel and lately I've been mapping out the values somewhat - break - paint for a while, and when I run out of tea - break - finish painting - break - repeat

During breaks I stretch or rest or get more tea or love on my dog. It's a very complicated system, I know. But it's working, and I think it's helping. At the very least I feel a little more balanced and sane.

Grapefruit Diet

I've never actually been on a grapefruit diet myself. But they looked delicious at the store the other day. The color inside is almost unbelievable. So grape-fruity!
