I feel like with every painting I get closer to capturing the essence of things. The trick is to see them as abstract shapes, actually, to see the whole thing as interconnected abstract shapes that don't necessarily end where the objects end. Look at the left side of the egg shell - it melds right into the plate. And shadows often bleed into each other, with the edge sometimes disappearing altogether. If I see all this as a series of puzzle pieces, without my brain getting too involved, then I can see what I need to paint. It's taken 25 or so years to get this far, and I'm sure I have much still to learn!

I found the image for this cat on one of those royalty-free sites. I felt it needed something, so I searched around for images of butterflies. Then I used my ipad and an art app to experiment with size and placement. The hard part was finding a butterfly in a similar light.

A Real Martini

My husband has a little rant he does at restaurants that serve a million kinds of martinis that aren't actually martinis. You know, the kinds with Kahlua and cream or things like that. I guess he's a martini purist. Pretty funny if you ask me.

Being a Maker

I grew up in a house of makers. My parents built their own (dome) house, shop, studio, etc. When they wanted a camper van they cut a hole in the top of our VW and built their own pop-up tent on top. My mother had an extensive garden, goats, and chickens, plus still has art projects going at all times. I could go on. And so when I met my husband and he was a maker too, it seemed perfectly normal. But in talking to all my married girl friends, I realize how lucky I am that he's handy. Most days you will find us making: paintings, websites, furniture, curtains, etc. It's an obsession. I love it.

What appealed to me about this scene were the tiny warm bits contrasted with the cool bits in the stack of eggs. It took me two tries to capture it, but I think it finally works.

This is a leftover from a recent bout of tomato painting. I ended up needing to fix a tiny thing that I didn't notice for a while. Then it had to dry again. And be varnished. It's all done now and ready to ship. : )

I got this little shot "glass" from a friend on a painting/camping trip in the Sierras a few years ago. Every night after a day of painting we would share cocktails and stories. Best drinking buddies ever!

My husband needs his coffee first thing, before he can function as a human being. I know a lot of other people like that too. I love coffee, but it does not love me. So if you're a tea drinker like me, the title is "First, Tea"!

Eggs have a tendency to roll away if they're just placed on a flat surface. That makes it hard to pose them unless they're in containers. I bet you never thought of that. ; )

Do We Have Enough Eggs?

Uncracked eggs are particularly challenging to paint because they have very subtle transitions. Lately I've been having a luck putting the number two value (the one slightly darker than the lightest) down first, then putting the lightest on TOP of that. Then working on the shadow side. I'm not sure why that works better for me, but it seems to with eggs. I'm always trying stuff.
