I am back home now and busy packing for our trip to Germany (leaving on Tuesday). I said goodbye on Friday to a new group of friends (kids) and was sad to leave them and Sedona. Below are all the demos I did in class - I happily got to photograph them all before they sold.
And below are my kids, whipped into shape by the last day (and it only took a little chocolate to bribe them). : ) Thank you all for such a fun week!
I mentioned one day last week about an exercise I had them do with a minimum number of brush strokes and subsequently got lots of emails/questions about that. One of the biggest reasons I hear about why people take my class is to become looser/less fussy. Of the things I suggest to my students, among them are: squint and see shapes and values rather than objects; make each brush stroke count/be deliberate; rather than defining your subject, consider suggesting it, with brush strokes . These things are very important in how I paint. I hope that explains it.

I love what you've said about deliberate brush strokes. It's something I aim for constantly, but have yet to master. I'm going to try your exercise of limiting my brushstrokes-- that's so smart!
Carol, Thank you for such an amazing week. You are not only a gifted artist but a natural born Teacher. I wish that I could express to you how much last week meant to me. Thank you and God Bless you...Kelli
Hello Carol,
it's the same in writing - "Make every word count." However, in painting I want to work on it. One question: how big are your brushes you use?
Happy packing O:-)
Greetings from Ulrike O:-)
What a wonderful blue and these empty eggshells....really cool!
I love your demos....such great neutral backgrounds make your colors so vibrant...wonderful stuff! yup, the old squinting seeing shapes and values...I need to have an eye lift from so much squinting :) but it sure works...
you do such a wonderful job of "suggesting" your subject.
Have a great time in Germany!
I hope you get into Europe ,,,as the darn Icelandic volcano is going at it AGAIN!! We are back to rainy kind of cool weather again...it was HOT a few weeks ago but pack some cooler weather things, you will need them....as that is the forecast for the next 6 days here.
So beautiful painting!
Carol, Thank you for being so generous with all of you painting ideas. Even though I took your workshop 2 years ago, I learn new things and am reminded of past lessons, just by reading your new posts! Your blog is terrific, just like you are!
Carol...I just love everything about your style of painting! You are a great inspiration. mmmm....I was wondering...the last time you went to Germany, you painted a lot of your beautiful landscapes, would you consider doing another "demo" of you doing a landscape? The demo that you have on your website is awesome! I would love to see more! I love your work!
these demos are to die for.
Especially the peppers! Delish!
