The long and short of this recent camping trip: I forgot my mineral spirits. So I didn't paint a lick. But, it turned out to be just what I needed. An enforced break. I was so happy my husband said "can you do it on purpose next time?"
The day I painted the above coast landscape was right after the Chile earthquake, when they were warning of huge waves all over, including CA. I was just about to paint on some rocks close to the water when the police showed up and shooed me away. Probably for the best. I ended up painting high up on a cliff and the weather was half sunny, half misty. This is my first coast painting. Below is the same scene with me and my buddy Penny blocking the view.

Carol--you look so natural standing along that coastline...and your first painting of it? Looks so natural too--you need to camp more often! I am glad as well that you forgot your mineral spirits. The universe knew what you needed--to just let your sould fill itself up. Nothing is ever lost---all of that abundance will spill out into your future canvases. It's inevitable--just as sure as the tide flows in and out, it was your time to have it roll in...:)
I went off on a day trip once and forgot the OMS. I did end up painting, but it was paint right out of the tube, unthinned. It was a different experience, to be sure - and I sold the painting! So, next time your forget, paint anyway
Carol - What a beautiful rendering of the rocky coastline! I am so impressed with how easily you move from still life into landscape so successfully! I am trying my best to get into one of your FL workshops!

Carol, I've missed your entries these last days. Good to know you were out re-filling your spirit. Sometimes we just need to sit and look and feel. But I know the itch to paint overtakes you when presented with such beautiful scenery. Hope to see more landscapes.
There is a wonderful feeling of distance and atmosphere here, Carol. You also did a wonderful job with the rhythm of the surf. No easy task.
The picture of you on the coast with your friend, Penny, is an apt reminder of why we love to paint in the first place. It's an amazing world we live in and you look very happy in it.

OMG!!! You know that I just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this painting of the coast!! You know my love for Calif and then to have you paint it is just too much for me!! You did a great job, as always, Carol and I really wish that you had done more cuz this is def. one of my top favs ever that you have done!!!
Carol, if you have a chance to talk a bit about your color choices, I would love to hear what you have to say. I often get stumped when painting grey days. Your painting has a wonderful warmth that I aspire to. When I look at the photograph I read much cooler colors, but they just don't have the same effect as your color choices.
