"Side of Orange" & new art box - SOLD

I recently got a new art box/system that I really like a lot. It is from Art Box and Panel, and developed by artist James Coulter. Below is a sort of overview shot. I would like to put a piece of glass in the palette part, and until then I am using a paper palette.

What I really like about this system is that the mixing of paint and the panel are in logical, workable places. And the mixing room is potentially a lot bigger, OR, like me, you can use it to put stuff like turp and medium, etc. There is even a handy brush holder that hangs off a really useable spot AND protects wet brushes when you're not painting.

Below is a closeup of the holder for the panel. And the new Kelty backpack I got to hold all my stuff. All of this is really lightweight and super easy to set up and take down. I recommend checking it out if you're looking for something like this. They just put up some videos that are very informative - check out the Art Box and Panel website.

I love this and I got a little homesick for Texas when I saw you were outside. It's below zero here with the wind-chill...

I love my Soltek Easel. All artists I know who own one, love theirs! AWESOME! Carries paint, palette, medium, brushes and comes with canvas/panel clip. Lightweight, quick set up, folds to become backpack friendly. soltekarts.com/ Soltek is the one to get. Jim Wilcox, tremendous landscape painter, invented it.

I know artists who have purchased different easels, but eventually ended up with the Soltek.

BTW, I don't work for them, but I put in a good word when I can.

What a cool set-up! I wonder if it would hold canvases as well as panels, and what the size limits would be. I'll check their web site.

The glow on that orange piece is just divine, Carol! These last few paintings with the bluey ceramics are so appealing to me!

I purchased the same easel at my last workshop. 3 artists there were using it and I was sold. I have been extremely happy with it and you will be too. Sets up quickly, lightweight, lots of working room, flexibility for panels and canvases, sturdy ltweight tripod. I use a palette paper in the middle working space-others put in glass or plexiglass and secured it with two small corks glued into the other panels. What model Kelty pack did you get-that was my next purchase??
By the way, I got your book for Christmas-love it.

carol, is the easel and pallette box all together? - ive been using a wooden foldout pallette for several years and love it - i just put it on my french easel and open it to hold everything. i have a neutral sheet of paper on the mixing space and then a glass piece over it. now if this setup of yours is all in one it might make pleinair painting a bit easier. then again - maybe i could just buy the easel part and hook my pallette on to it. in any event, when you start painting on glass you'll love it - easy to keep the mixing area clean...scrape off with a painter's blade or spritz with alcohol or wipe with turp. i'll check out the website - thanks for the info!! and the good work, as usual!

I have had the same art box from Art and Panel for 4 years now and I love it. So easy to put up and down. They have a different set of holders to accommodate a stretched canvas and both types came with my set. The company owner has provided great paintings panels and carriers too.
I had friends with the Soltek one mentioned but they had problems with sand and dirt getting into the bottom of the scoping legs. It also costs twice as much which was a huge factor for me.

Hi Carol,

I have this easel and love it! I like the brush holder you have attached. Did you make that? I looked at the Art Box website and didn't see it. Would love to know how your attached it.

Thanks!
Angie

Angie, I didn't make the brush holder - the owner of the co made it just for me. But, if you contact him he'll make one for you too. He's a real nice guy. : ) It's attached with a little screw that and a notched part on the holder.

Hi Carol! Hope you are great. After seeing your setup at the workshop in Toronto, I am thinking about getting myself this nifty easel. Any advice about the size of the box, the size of the panel holder and whether to buy the extras? Thanks a bunch!

Laurel- Hi and thanks! I have the smallest box and have been very happy with it, but if you feel you need more mixing room you might want a larger one. I would definitely get the tripod (unless you have one you love) - it is lightweight, easy to take down and put up, indestructable. And I would definitely opt for the brush holder. It is awesome. But if you strap it to your backpack and try to take it through security at the airport, they might think it's a pipe bomb. ; ) Happened to me. Good luck!
