"Flying Tomatillo" - SOLD

I have forever passed by the tomatillo's in the grocery store because ... well to be honest I thought they'd be too hard to paint. But I was feeling adventurous the other day and picked up a few, for kicks. I used a panel that was pre-primed many days before and therefore dry. Usually I prime right before I paint. I have to admit I really liked it for this mostly light (high-key) painting. It was just the right color to put the blue over ... I like the bits of brown peeking through. What I never knew about tomatillo's is that they're kind of sticky under the paper-thin wrapper. Weird. But totally fun to paint!

This is great! I agree with you about the brown peeking through. Will you tell me/us which green you used (mostly)? I've only just discovered Cinnabar Green... but this doesn't look exactly the same. (could be the monitor, too.)
Wonderful work.

What a fun tomatillo! He looks so happy! I tried ONCE to paint a tomatillo. That paper thin husk almost did me in. Your background blue is yummy, the reflected light in your cast shadow is lovely, and as always, your brushwork is so loose yet efficient. I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to your workshops in San Antonio and Salado.

Carol, This is just beautiful, so elegant, almost abstract. I love the "wings", they look very mysterious and celestial! I just picked up a copy of "Southwest Art" and there you are!! So exciting! Congratulations!! How wonderful!! You certainly deserve this, what an accomplishment!! Wishing you all the best, Nancy

Mizbish said "he". I thought it was a she. How funny! I like everything about it, including the title. Very nice work.

Hi Carol, It's been a while since you listed the colors you use on your palette, would you mind doing it again? I know you work from a pretty limited palette but I can't remember exactly what. Like this painting and I also like seeing the toned canvas color showing through.

They've also intimidated me. Funny how the produce aisle has always beckoned to me. I just want to buy every weird thing.
I think you're a painter's 'self help' guru Carol.
You try it, we'll try it.
