The Water's Fine

Yesterday I painted for 6 hours on a larger painting only to realize it was a wiper. I hate it when that happens. My husband did his best to talk me down from the ledge, to no avail. Poor guy. For me the best remedy for this kind of mess is redemption, aka, to paint a keeper. So I returned to a familiar subject - orange slices.

So famous artists have occasional 'wipers' also?? That's kind of reassuring. So on a bad day a I can say to myself "Hey - even Carol Marine messes up sometimes! Well then, so can I!"
But it's Ok that you don't show anyone the results .... neither do I...
PS: the oranges are super, as usual!

I've read some of those mails about wipers these days on artist's blogs. So, why worry O;-) The spring will come soon, I'm sure. All wipers will go, wont's they?

I follow your work everyday, and I am seeing a big progress in your way of painting. You are forgeting the detail (The biggest enemy of a painter) and going "abstract" with the cleaner stroke I have ever seen...

Congratulations, you are gonna be a Big Artist.

Don't keep painting Carol, the canvas talk to you and you talk with the canvas, that is the secret of the good artists...

Warmest Regards.

Nacho Frades.

Our poor spouses, they have to put up with a lot, don't they? My husband has to listen to me wailing "Why is painting so HARD?" after every wiper. Your remedy turned out beautifully.

Hi! Wondering if you can put into words yet, (might be too soon/too close to the process to articulate) as to what 'went wrong' with the painting to make it a wiper.

I wish you had posted a picture of your "wiper". I'm curious to see what you would consider a wiper. I bet to my eyes it was fabulous.

Don't feel bad; the guy next door has two giant paintings he's wrestling with.

This piece is wonderful for the limited color and shape repetition; both qualities of a art deco fabric.

So sorry Carol. Thank you for sharing it though, comforting to know that everyone has struggles. If it wasn't so challenging it probably wouldn't be so addictive. The oranges are wonderful.

I know how deflating it can be to work on something for such a long time and not have it work out. I think we've all been on that ledge at some point, and re-visit it from time to time. Lessons are learned though and we just keep painting because it's what we love to do. You are a wonderful painter, Carol. Just remember that.

it's the struggle that makes you better...

Carol, so many of us can relate to your ledge comment. HA. Incidentally, we have framed the famous first funny face painting of Katie as "The Elvis Impersonator". It looks really cool in this blue frame!

Enjoy, Eileen
