It was gray and/or raining for a lot of the time I was last in Florence (so much that my flight home was delayed because of flooding!). I tend to prefer sunny scenes, but ended up getting a lot of more subtle references that I never would have gotten otherwise. And I just love the reflections of their shoes on the wet sidewalk.

This one reminds of an old timey circus with the green goblet as a "curiosity." Though I'm not sure what's curious about it except that it's awesome.

No, we can never have enough bags. And in Florence there are about a million stores the specialize in them. So it's quite impossible to come back from there not having bought at least one. I speak from experience.

I can't help myself - whenever I paint orange slices I have to do one or two paired with blue glass. The combination is so yummy to me.

I've been posting my paintings here, on Facebook, and on Instagram for a while. I seem to be getting more and more spam messages and comments, mostly on Facebook. Sometimes more spam than not spam. Anyone else experiencing that?

This is another little city-scene from Florence, Italy. I was there teaching a workshop this past spring and am finally feeling motivated to tackle some paintings. I knew it would happen eventually. I try not to push it anymore. There's a time for everything.

I've been digging this horizontal format lately. It's a different way to compose vs the square I typically use. More like a landscape, which is probably why they call it that. Ha.

Blue Finds You

With these recent still life paintings I've been trying to slow down and be more deliberate with my strokes. A downside to this is that it takes longer, and I risk running out of steam before I finish. Also if I slow down too much then I find myself getting tight. And so, like with many things, I find a balance needs to be maintained. Ahh, but if it were easy it would be boring.

When you are in the center of Florence (Italy), there are often several tour groups touring around you, at all times. This makes for lovely clumps of people to photograph. My thanks to group twelve for posing so nicely.

I have this one little piece of yellow paper, and the cups seem to love it. I think it may be an unhealthy obsession.

I know I've had quite a run with apples, but the little blue bird just discovered the very last one, hiding behind the cups. And now we'll move on to other subjects. : )

This one reminds me of my own wedding. We went to a local JP with just my husband's two little girls. We have exactly one picture, that we took ourselves, with the girls hamming it up in the background.

And speaking of kids, a friend of mine wrote a very cute book called, "Welcome Home, Margot Flamingo," a sweet lesson about getting a new dog. It makes a great gift. : )

Lately I've been thinking about how much the "rules" of art help us, vs. intuition/feelings. I've pretty much decided that it has to be a balance, and personally I have to monitor that balance often. When I start getting tight and rigid and afraid I remind myself - "Carol, don't overthink it." And that helps me remember to play. Because if I don't play then I don't get unexpected things, and it's the unexpected things that lead me to new ideas and growth. It can also lead to me falling on my face, but if that's the price I pay for growth then I'll pay it.

Lately I've been focusing a lot on me. That probably sounds weird, and it feels funny to write. But in terms of art I've been asking myself - rather than what other people might like, or what might sell - what I actually enjoy painting. Maybe second to that is what I might enjoy seeing as a result. And one of the things I enjoy most is a technical challenge. And fun colors. So this is me being self-indulgent.
