Hello all! I am home from Texas and finally caught up and painting again. The workshop went really well, and I will post about that soon. But first, I wanted to point out that the reference for this painting (from NYC) is one I used for
this week's Daily Paintworks Challenge. So if you're interested in seeing what I was working from, and/or trying it out yourself, click that link.

Since it's a frontal view of a child, did you get a release? What do you generally do about releases for figure reference?
Hi Gayle. My understanding is that if they are out in public, I can take pictures if I want, and paint from them too. I think the saving grace is that in my paintings I never shoot for a "likeness" (it's hard to do that anyway on such small panels), and I'm not doing anything negative with the images (like the paparazzi sometimes do). If I have someone pose for me, on the other hand, I get a release, and I pay them for their time.
I would check with an intellectual property attorney and investigate the privacy laws for your state, as they differ.
Thanks for the info, Diane. I'll look into it.
