Red Hot Couple

This is a scene from a park in San Francisco. There was a solid gray granite wall behind them, but after trying a few other things (that didn't work), I turned it into bushes and sky.

I think this is one of my favorite figuratives that you have painted! Excellent !

That's interesting to know. I think choosing bushes and sky has lightened the mood, and also somehow fulfils a need in me to place them in an environment - I can't know, but I imagine with the original grey wall there instead, it might have lowered the mood of the painting. She might have appeared bored and fed up with him being on his mobile, whereas this background of the natural world softens the whole atmosphere. To me it looks companionable and relaxed, not gloomy as it might have done. If that makes sense?!

Love it. Especially the way the figures fill the picture plane.
