Sunrise at the Edge

Yes, I am still posting paintings from my trip to the Sierra's! : ) I started this one morning before breakfast. The light was changing very quickly, so I decided I would get the sketch and a basic block-in first. Then the next day, at the same time, I went back and finished it. This the first time I've done that, and I liked it a lot. There are 2 reasons (I realize now) that I lucked out. 1. It was dry enough that my paint from the first day wasn't tacky like it would be in Oregon on day two. 2. The weather was the same both days.

Beautiful as always. I have to ask a technical question though. Do you use many different brushes to keep your colors so bright? I find that when I paint that I use a very minimal amount of brushes and my colors tend to become muddy. Maybe I'm lazy but I don't want to hold 10 different brushes with each color in the painting.

Thanks, Chris! I don't use many brushes. Instead I clean the 2 or 3 (of different sizes) I use pretty often. I also plan out the order of my strokes so that I don't get mud. I think that's the key - you've got to plan out the order of things so you don't end up going back over and over things (aka "licking" the canvas, or "petting the puppy"). Hope that helps! : )

Your paintings from the Sierras are extraordinary. What a pleasure it is to see how you chose to interpret the landscape with your compositional decisions, lively brushwork and color palette.
