Goose Pit Stop

This one is also from the Finley Wildlife Refuge here in Oregon (same as yesterday). I was feeling like maybe the colors were a bit drab, but a few minutes ago my stepdaughter passed behind me, saw the painting on my computer and said, "Great colors!" (Thanks, Maddie!) They were definitely what I saw. My buddies that I painted with said they were "very...accurate." I'm often torn with if and how much I should exaggerate when I'm outside. It's something I experiment with, and will continue to do so. For now, here's an accurate, overcast, Oregon marsh.

I don't see drab, I see subtle, beautiful, true to nature. Here in the UK we're world experts on overcast days. Personally I love them and call them the dove-grey days. This painting is one of my favourites of yours, Carol.

Love the brush strokes on the marsh grasses!

I like the reflections. The dark horizontal line at the base of the plants and then those vertical lines going into the water are really interesting.

Your colors really are accurate. I come up with similar colors here in western Oregon and am always wishing I could figure out how to make them more appealing but can't seem to make myself paint something I'm not seeing. It's a discussion I'd enjoy having with local painters.
You did a beautiful job with this. I especially love how you sculpted the leaf area of the rushes in the middle ground. All of it, so nice.

When I saw this painting I was like, WOW, beautiful painting & colors. Then I read you thought maybe the colors were drab. Me thinks not! Very seriously not! 'Tis absolutely beautiful!

Paint what you see, not what you think you see,
It's beautifully composed. Lovely transitions in the water. Quite accurate.

The great Richard Schmid said that the best painting days outdoors are bright overcast as colors are the most saturated. That's why this painting works so well! Not drab at all.
