"Tied Up" - SOLD

On the second morning painting in Maine the sun came out. We were thrilled, especially since all the reports called for more rain. I painted this little boat tied up in front of a dock. I really loved the little red lifesaver, and the light relfecting around inside the boat.
I got a lot out of seeing Colin's references - seeing what he painted and how he painted it. One thing I saw him do on a cloudy afternoon was to lighten the values. I realized that while it is VERY important for all the values to be accurate, they only have to be accurate relative to each other. If you lighten everything a notch, they still relate and "read" if you will. So for this one I tried that just a little, which allowed me to play more with the colors.

Carol, you did this beautifully! That little boat looks so happy, I want to go for a ride. And I've been thinking about your point about lightening everything up, as Colin did on that overcast day. A good lesson for all of us who have "fear of white", of which I am one.

And I forgot to say, the pier is pretty spectacular in this painting. It makes s super backdrop for the boat.

I really like the way you painted this little boat! And happy you had fun painting in Maine - Colin's a doll, I took a workshop with him last year, and it was a good one. I hope you enjoyed painting boats - we don't see that too often from you!

Your technique of lightening the values worked well - good thinking, can't wait to try it!

We met Colin Page at the Door County Plein Air Festival. He has "rock star" status up there as he made cover of this year's festival booklet. He was a delight to watch! his unconventional looks and incredible talent is a great mix. Why not apply to the Festival next year? Check with Colin about it. I think he will tell you it is
financially worthwhile! It would be great to see you both in action!
