This is one of the paintings from my camping trip last week. I'll tell you more about it soon. First I want to add a couple of things to the painting from photos discussion (see yesterday's post and comments for more). Yes, I think it is best to paint from your own photos. And yes, a long time ago I stopped printing them out and instead paint from a monitor set up next to my easel. Because the light shines through everything is just more vibrant and alive (as close to as you can get w/ a photo). And, yes I agree, painting from life IS "funner!" And, as Karin Jurick said, "it doesn't matter if you're standing in a field or looking at a photo - whatever gets you to paint!"

I agree. Regardless of the method, the important thing is that you're painting. At the moment I'm working from printed photos as I enjoy being able to hold it close (if I need to) to see all the details, but with how cheap LCDs have become it wouldn't take long to recoup the cost that you would've spent on ink cartridges. I've seen quite a few artists that also work with a laptop next to their easel to display their reference.
Thanks for letting me follow along Carol!
While I totally agree with "whatever gets you to paint..." my problem with working from photos is that the photo itself is a two dimensional object, and I always struggle with finding the 3d feeling from a 2d source reference.
Anybody else have this problemo?
Lovely painting Carol. I agree with you about Plein Air or photos, It doesn`t matter where you are painting from, It`s your choice. I love also painting Plein Air and from photos. Thank you for mentioning it. Lets hope that subject goes to bed now eh? All the best carol.
Vic.
Amen, Carol! And I love the truck!
whe I paint from digital phots I load them to my IPOD then I can just plug the IPOD into my tv screen to paint from. It's just an old tv I had laying around. I think the above comment is right..this is cheaper than ink.. and better image quality.
Did I say how much I admire your work carol?
good advice as always, I love the auto/truck series!
Good point Carol. And don't forget about the opportunity to skip pictorial references altogether and just paint from your heart.
PS: You have another fan at my house--my 7-year-old son LOVES your car and truck paintings! :-)
Love your series of truck paintings, you should make us vote which we think are from photos and which was painted from real life just to see if anyone can really tell. I know a few artists that turn their noses up at painting from photos but it's almost impossible to paint from life all the time.
All of your paintings of old vehicles are soooo good! I'm really enjoying them. This one is my favorite. Love those pale greens and rusts together. Great proportions and angles on this one too.
