I painted this last week. A thistle is especially challenging because it has tons of tiny ... are they petals? Anyway, I approached it as I would a tree outside, sort of.
We are here in Germany, settling in. It rained most of today, when it wasn't snowing. I won't be able to paint still for a few days because of things going on here, but I hope it stops raining by the time I can, as I am eager.

this is lovely and you really did manage to capture that prickly little bud! I'm looking forward to your postings from Germany. I bought one them last year.
These colors are gorgeous! You did a wonderful job on the thistle. You are always able to take the ordinary and make it extraordinary. Love it!
I am looking forward to seeing your paintings from Germany. Hope you and your family are having a great time!
Thistle do...; nice little study. Happy struedle (ugggh...SP)!
Might be one of my favorites, but it's hard to decide because I love all of your work so much. I really love the color in this one.
Good job Carol!
A strong little painting!
Enjoy your trip! It's raining here in England as well today! Sunshine forecast for tomorrow though, get those brushes out!
Love this one. I am always impressed that you include just enough detail to suggest that object and let the viewer fill in the rest.
Hope you have a great holiday and happy painting.
Carol, I've been working my way backwards through your archives. Amazing!
Can I ask what type of lamp(s) you use for your shadow box? Are they warm/cool/other?
Hi Carol,
What a "darling" little thistle. Love it as I do all of your other paintings.
I'm back in Canada and thinking of you and your family in Germany. My mind is still wrapped up in my incredible experience at your workshop in Sedona. Saying "thank you" for the valuable lessons, guidance, and friendship doesn't seem to be enough. Have a fantastic time, your friend in Canada, Tracy Szekely
Yes, great deep color. this challenges me to paint a thistle from a photo I've had for ages and keep thinking about.you will have your "sea legs" now from painting in the snowy workshop :)
This is great. Love the colors and how it looks like a thistle, but not. Awww, you know what I mean. Great stuff. Have a good time!
Great colors and love the strong brush marks. Quite stunning!
especial trabalho!
awesome!
So 'less is more'!
You make it look so easy. This is very simple, clean and fresh. A lovely painting.
Thank you all so much! I missed the question, and in case you look again, Andy, I use two lights often in my shadow box. One is warm and one is cool. I like to use them both at once sometimes, and sometimes one or the other. The warm one is a daylight spotlight bulb. The other was about $15 from a lightbulb store - they said it was truly white.
