"Alien Apples" - SOLD

I want to thank all of you who have passed on blog awards to me recently. I am incredibly honored! That said, I have been really busy for a while and some things have fallen through the cracks, including emailing you back. For the same reason, I haven't been able to post about the awards and pass them along to others. Also, if you have emailed me and I haven't written back, I sincerely apologize. I get a lot every day. I try to answer if there is a question, but again, sometimes they fall through the cracks. If it is really important, please email me again. Thank you!

A few of you have asked to see the portrait that was shown on the Dr. Phil show. It is of my stepdaughter, Maddie, from a photo I took of her when she was 5 or 6, painted about 9 years ago. It is quite large, maybe 30"x40". It hangs above our fireplace.

AMAZING portrait!!! You've captured not just a face but a whole person. Wow wee!

Love the apples too, the red showing through on the dish in particular and the angle from which it's painted. Lovely lovely!

ahhh a whole plate full!!! This portrait of your stepdaughter is wonderful...makes me smile, makes me feel good as you really captured her joy,,the actual feeling. Looks like she is sitting in the backseat of a car "enjoying the ride"....

carol - that portrait of maddie is fabulous!! and 30x40?!~ after completing a 22x28 painting of a close-up face, i know how hard it is to paint that large...you almost can't get in a room big enough to back up enough to see what you're doing! i agree with your earlier statement that you needed to get back into some portraits! good stuff!

Love the portrait! Do you paint many portraits now or just still lifes?

What a fabulous painting of Maddie. I bet there hasn't been a person to not smile loudly when looking at it.

Thanks, ya'll! It's funny, because I look at it every day, and have for years and years, I haven't "seen" it in a while. It's nice to see it through your eyes.

Mary, I haven't done a portrait in years, except for a couple of small self-portraits from life. I don't want to do them as commissions anymore, but I am planning one of my son.

I saw the Dr. Phil show and thought this painting was incredible, it just captures the absolute delight of being a child - and takes one back in time to that feeling!

Any tricks to a portrait, do you think differently when painting one than you do with the still lifes?

Great question, Lisa! Honestly, it's been so long since I painted one that I don't remember. I'll think about it when I get around to painting my son and post about it. Thanks!

I really love this. It's neat to see your portrait work. Would love to see more. Can't wait for your workshop, just a few more days. :)

looking back through your archives I found this portrait. (my usual, recent subject-matter) I love the effervescent quality. Having 2 grand daughers, I can see the total "joy" in her smile. I love this...and I understand the comment about seeing it all the time, and not really "seeing it".. thanks for sharing !
