"German Boats" - SOLD

Click Here to Bid (will begin Friday, 9/18/09, 8pm, pst)

Another painting in the dreary weather that I am very happy to have done. Actually, there are a few beneftis of painting in overcast conditions, in my opinion: 1. the light doesn't change much at all, so there's no chasing of it; 2. you don't have to worry about finding shade, for you or your painting; and 3. you don't have to worry about warm vs. cool - it's pretty much all cool.

Some of you have suggested I do some still lifes or interiors, and I would really love to, but the mineral spirits I have are too stinky to use inside. I looked for Gamsol at an art store in Freiberg, but they had never heard of it. Alas.

I'd learned that in sunlit scenes that what is lit is warm and what is not directly lit is cool. I met a painter who insisted that on overcast days it reverses, and he made all his shadow areas warmer.

Maybe it's just the contrast he was going for.

I'm seeing that a bit some of those boat shadows. Maybe your subconscious was pushing you in that direction. Hmmm. Gotta try this myself sometime.

Carol, I am an artist with chemical
allergies so I am aware of the mineral spirits smell. I use linseed oil or safflower oil as a medium. Don't know if safflower oil
is available in Germany but it works fine without any odor.

That is a lovely painting. :) Not sure how long you'll be here, but Gerstaecker.de sells odorless turpentine substitute / terpentinersatz geruchlos. I haven't ordered from them before, but they seem to be good.

Carol-it's amazing how well this piece reads, value, shapes, even as a thumbnail. It popped up on my sidebar on my blog this morning and knocked my socks off! It's been great seeing your works from Germany--a bit of armchair travel for me and interesting seeing you work in the landscape each day.
