"Limelight" - SOLD

Someone asked me today about the lights in my studio. I am currently set up in our bedroom as I wait for my new studio to be built. There I will have several, big, north-facing windows and hope to utilize that light. For now I use daylight, florescent bulbs mounted on the ceiling - the long kinds that don't buzz. To avoid glare I have them mounted directly above my easel. The only drawback is that it lights the top of my panels more than the bottom. It isn't so noticeable for the small panels, but with the bigger ones it gets downright problematic. Any ideas?

Lisa Call, a textile artist has written extensively as her studio has been built. There might be something there that would help you as you plan your own studio. Go here:

Hi Carol, I got two of these portable daylight lamps for Christmas. I hang one on my easel and the other sits on the table where my pastels or other medium is. So handy as you can move them around and they close up to make moving easy. (They were on sale for Christmas, you might check other outlets .. I think they were $29 each.) They work great, too.

Not a problem Carol, you will soon be in your new studio with the large windows. Beautiful lighting and composition in this painting.

Definitely wear a white apron or men's shirt or something white to bounce some light back onto the canvas. A quick fix maybe until you get some side lights.

I'd recommend a ledge at the bottom of the easel, painted white or made of a white material like foamcore.

You should get enough bounce from the lights above to even out the canvas.

I Love your lost edges in this piece.

For your light: what about mounting your fluorescent lights vertically on the wall instead of the ceiling? I've seen an artist's studio in a magazine who had installed fluorescent lights along his North windows and used them during darker days or at night. I don't know if that can be done in a bedroom size studio...

This painting reminds me of my three boys. Each excels in different things at different times. My oldest is graduaating from high school tomorrow so he is in the limelight. My middle son's baseball team had an amazing run in the playoffs so it was his turn last week. My youngest son is heading in to volleyball JO's so his turn will be next week. Love the painting and LOVE the title!

perhaps a temporary fix would be to move the light from the top of the easel to the side (closest to your windows) ... so it is vertical - along the entire side edge of your canvas ... so it adds to the natural light streaming in ... which seems to be coming from the left side - as many other great artists have used ... love your work !!!!
