Thanks so much to all of you who hazarded a guess about these mystery flowers. Several of you were right and sent some fabulous photos for me to check against. Thank you! They are called Clarkia (or Godetia) - apparently first discovered by Lewis and Clark. Here is a better photo.

Love learning something new about plants! Thanks, Carol. I see that Monticello has seeds for sale -- apparently Jefferson thought highly of this plant! I had never seen a Clarkia (Godetia) before, but I do grow a close relative, pink evening primrose. I have always loved them! Thanks for your beautiful paintings and for new PLANT knowledge! A great combo!
