"Hanging Out" --- SOLD

My son is asking a lot of questions these days. It started out with "What's that?" and now, depending on the answer to the first question, he asks what the thing is doing. So, if it's a tree, for instance, he says "what's the tree doing?". I say things like "the tree is growing," or "it's blowing in the wind." But he keeps asking, as if my answer isn't quite right, and after a while I hit my fallback answer which is "it's hanging out." For some reason he seems to be satisfied when things are just hanging out. Now he's getting into "why?". So, if he asks, "why are these strawberries hanging out?", can I in good conscience answer "they just are"?

definitely yes...and you could also ask him what he thinks they're doing...and why. kids can come up with the most awesome and original responses to these kinds of questions and it's not like there's a right answer after all :)
a wonderful painting as ever...love your new fabrics!

I'm with deeber - "what do YOU think it's doing...?" works every time, and gives you more to work with.

The strawberries have such intense color - your hand-dyed fabrics are working out great!

I have a 3-year-old son and he rarely stops speaking. I find that I must answer all questions with at least a single syllable; he simply will not relent until I do! but yes, to your question--whatever it takes to keep your sanity when those little voices keep asking asking asking. ; ) I lurk here often; if I've never told you, I really admire and adore your style. The last week of paintings are just stunning; those close-up cherries are absolutely yummy. To misquote Jack Nicholson in As Good as It Gets, "You make me want to be a better painter." Thanks for the inspiration.

Our twins are still asking that question! Turning the question around for them to answer works great for a while, we do as best we can till we need to get on with our day and that's when we pull out the "Just say Oh", they say "Oh!" and that will satisfy them for an hour or so.

By the by, I'm loving your stamped materials!

The apple does not fall far from the tree. Like your husband, I guess your son will be the next source of creative painting titles.
Ditto Mel's misquote.

Hey Carol- I'm passing on something called the Arte y Pico Award to you. You may or may not have the time or inclination to pass it on yourself, but I had to tell you that I admire you and that you inspire me... every day. Thank you!
