I was really attracted to the reflections on the cup in this setup. I think the trick to getting reflections "right" is keeping them real. What I mean is that reflections are usually fairly subtle, and I really try to take that into account. I try to look at the actual value and try to recreate it. I've learned that if I stay as true as possible to value and proportions, my paintings are most successful. Then I can be as creative as I want with color and composition.
Wow! What an awesome painting.
ReplyDeleteI love all your paintings but this one really rattles my soul.
This is so IMPRESSIVE!
ReplyDeleteReally great work Carol - and so much more difficult to get reflections and values right when you are doing 'one hit' brushwork. There's just so much to admire in this piece.
I make that three 'so's - I think you can tell that you hit the spot with this one.
I agree with the previous comments, this is a fantastic piece. You've hit the values spot on and the subtlety of the reflections give it its allure. The dark background also works well for me in drawing the focus to the foreground.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful piece, Carol. Such wonderful, confident painting.
ReplyDeleteLovely! I agree with you that reflections are more subtle than the original. What a great observation about value/proportions. I'll have to experiment with that, because I usually have composition govern everything.
ReplyDeleteBTW, the yellowish underpainting really warms this up; love it!!
Wow. This is one of my absolute favorites. The lighting is so dramatic and gorgeous, I'd love to see you use more of it! Great one!
ReplyDeleteI left one comment, but it disappeared into cyber space. Love the complex composition...every square inch works great. Really like the yellow underpainting peeking through...adds excitement and harmony.
ReplyDeletemy first time here... I really enjoy your distinct style of painting; very refreshing and unique

I really like your painting style! I found you because we were both on the 101 list. :-) Good to know you're a fellow Texan!
ReplyDeleteWow, This beautiful, what a little gem of a painting! Perhaps because there are several items in the composition and we can see how you handle the light source, values and the reflections.
ReplyDeletelet alone the silver... the reflection in it blows my mind. nice work.

Beautiful composition, the reflection in the mug, the mosaic paint brush strokes in the table cloth, the importance of the orangy-red fruit to give it that extra punch of color = a masterpiece!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant, what else is left to say, except I love the grouping of lights vs. darks with that punch of orange. Wow!

Wow! What a painting. The reflections are so natural. And the dark background and white foreground fits well! Nice, nice, nice.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting composition. You always say so much without over working it. Barb
ReplyDeleteI'll have to agree with all of the above Carol. Nice one. I read the comment yesterday about the new work on your web site and I also checked it out. Love those larger still lives and the flowers. Awesome stuff.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful work. It's so holistic: the composition, brushwork and movement work together perfectly.
