I was really attracted to the reflections on the cup in this setup. I think the trick to getting reflections "right" is keeping them real. What I mean is that reflections are usually fairly subtle, and I really try to take that into account. I try to look at the actual value and try to recreate it. I've learned that if I stay as true as possible to value and proportions, my paintings are most successful. Then I can be as creative as I want with color and composition.

ReplyDeleteReally great work Carol - and so much more difficult to get reflections and values right when you are doing 'one hit' brushwork. There's just so much to admire in this piece.
I make that three 'so's - I think you can tell that you hit the spot with this one.
I agree with the previous comments, this is a fantastic piece. You've hit the values spot on and the subtlety of the reflections give it its allure. The dark background also works well for me in drawing the focus to the foreground.

Beautiful composition, the reflection in the mug, the mosaic paint brush strokes in the table cloth, the importance of the orangy-red fruit to give it that extra punch of color = a masterpiece!
